We’ve stayed at the Eliza Thompson house at least twice a year for the past three years, and we plan to keep coming because the staff and location are such a draw. Jennifer and Nell are especially welcoming and helpful, and Charles knows his stuff. The house is still beautiful, and the evening gathering with other guests feels special. We’ve made a lot of friends there. The recent changes to breakfast and the hot appetizer hour have been a letdown. Now the gathering is just a charcuterie board, which doesn’t compare with what they used to serve. Breakfast is much like a Best Western hotel breakfast. Before, they gave you a menu the day before and prepared your choices for the next morning, including eggs made any style you wanted. That felt more personal and was appreciated. I hope both breakfast and happy hour go back to how they were.
When we got home, the hotel called about an hour after we’d left because I’d forgotten my diamond necklace by the bed. The cleaning lady found it and turned it in, and a very sweet young woman called my husband and mailed it to us. It arrived today with a kind note. It’s reassuring to know honest people work there. We had a wonderful first experience at a true bed and breakfast. We stayed in the Summit suite outside downstairs, and it was very clean. The staff were great from check-in to check-out. We spent hours chatting in the common area over cheese, wine, sweets, and port wine. The company was lovely and the fire was just right. If you want a really cool place in Savannah, I highly recommend Eliza Thompson House.
The afternoon wine and cheese reception was a real highlight, with a generous spread of cheese, crackers, meats, and different wines, all included. The staff clearly wanted to make our stay enjoyable, and the old building had plenty of historic charm and antique furniture. It’s in a beautiful part of historic Savannah, within easy walking distance of lots of restaurants and antique shops. We spent four nights in a queen garden room. The routine daily housekeeping had been done, but it needed a deeper clean. The light switches were grimy, there were brown smudges on the white bathroom door and doorway, and crumbs were caught in the chair folds. Breakfast was a disappointment after reading the glowing Google reviews. The homemade food was maybe 20% better than what you’d get at a chain hotel. During the busy part of breakfast, staff had trouble keeping the buffet stocked, and guests were left waiting while items ran out. They did clear plates promptly. It’s a unique place in a great location, but at the price, it didn’t feel like the four-star inn experience we expected. I’d put it somewhere between okay and good.
We felt calm from the moment we arrived, and the staff were welcoming and full of that southern hospitality. James brought our bags to the room and was there whenever we needed help. The front desk team were friendly, fabulous, and very knowledgeable about directions and recommendations. Our breakfast servers were attentive to everyone, and being seated and served at the table made breakfast relaxed and enjoyable. The chefs’ breakfasts were top notch, and the cleaning service was wonderful too. Tica helped me get rid of something nasty I’d stepped in. I wanted to thank all of you for making our stay such a lovely experience. We really appreciated Tica, James, Keisha, Deangeles, Mike, Nell, and Sherrol. Wishing you a Merry Christmas.
After I’d left Savannah, I called Eliza Thompson House because my truck had broken down and I’d had to leave it behind. I’d arranged auto transport, and the truck was parked at an angle to the curb so it could be winched onto the semi. I’d been in a hurry and hadn’t managed everything carefully. Jennifer (Jen) answered and offered to put a note on the truck so it wouldn’t be towed. She explained how I could pay the meter or buy a parking pass from Eliza Thompson House for the day, which I did. She walked over a block to leave the note and pass, then called me back to say the truck was still there and everything was fine. She reassured me about its position and felt confident it wouldn’t be towed. After our stay, the staff told my fiancée, “as long as you’re in Savannah you’re still our guest.” Jen’s kindness after I’d left really showed they meant it. It’s a beautiful, peaceful house in a cozy historic neighborhood, near downtown attractions like City Market and the Riverside Market. The staff are warm, friendly, professional, and welcoming. Staying there feels much more personal than staying in a hotel.
