The Confederate House

Colleen made us delicious cookies and cake, and a fabulous breakfast. She also told us stories about life in Savannah, and reminded me of a character from the book Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. We had a lovely stay at the Confederate House in November. The beautiful house feels like stepping back in time, and the beds were very comfortable.

The house itself was nice, the bed was comfortable, and the late-night cake was good. But it looked like no one had cleaned under the bed in a very long time. Be ready for hosts who are rude and very outspoken about their political views. They were VERY pro-Trump and generally insensitive when talking about immigrants, which made breakfast awkward. My fiancé ate breakfast only once during our three mornings there to avoid those conversations. I won't stay again.

We liked the location in the historic area and thought the Confederate House was reasonably priced for our day in Savannah. The house is spacious, charming, and fully restored, with shared parking behind it. There isn't a sign at the front, so count the house numbers to find the place. Our room was comfortable, with a roomy bathroom. Water pressure was weak and it took a while for the water to warm up, understandable in an old house but worth knowing. Breakfast was biscuits and gravy with watermelon and fresh coffee. The stairs and breakfast conversation were part of the experience. Miss Coleen is a product of her generation and dominated the conversation, leaving little room for anyone else. She didn't introduce the guests to one another or introduce herself to my sister, whom she hadn't met at check-in. She seemed to miss social cues too. Everyone had finished eating, with empty settings, but she kept talking about fellow Savannah residents until I told my sister we needed to go. We realized within an hour of leaving that my sister had left her tablet in the room, so we turned around. Miss Coleen was out for lunch and said she'd be back at 1 or 2. We explored as planned, returned at 2, and called to check that she was in and had the tablet. She did. We said my sister would come right to the door, but Miss Coleen said she was cleaning and couldn't come out, so we would have to wait until 3. We drove around for another hour to pick it up. The forgotten tablet was our mistake, but she'd told us she'd be back at 2. Why make us return at 3 and delay our travel plans, which she already knew about from check-in and breakfast? That self-centered, frankly rude service is why we won't return. We strongly recommend choosing somewhere else.

Colleen knows the area well, and she's a gracious host. I enjoyed her company and felt lucky to get to experience her beautiful home. With its big windows and wide views, the place is incredible. The B&B sits right on the park, and you can walk to everything. We parked when we arrived and didn't need the car again until leaving Savannah.
