Springhill Suites Phoenix Scottsdale Marriott

The pool was quiet and clean, but that was the one bright spot. We travel for work and stay in hotels often, and this was probably my worst hotel stay in a long time. The room was miserably hot at night, apparently set to shut off in the evening, and the road traffic came through the windows all night, even on a Wednesday. Noise from the floor above started at 6 a.m. and was awful. The bed had deep dips that made sleeping on my side uncomfortable, and the lumpy pillows left my neck and face hurting. I slept terribly. The scented air fresheners in the lobby and room were rough on my allergies. The shower head couldn't be adjusted and sprayed thin jets that took ages to rinse off. We forgot our fan, which was our mistake, but when I asked whether they had one, the reaction made me feel like I was crazy. Some hotels have one, some don't, and that's fine, but the response was strange. Breakfast started about half an hour late.

I left feeling rested, and the calm, well-kept setting helped from the moment we arrived. Check-in was smooth, with staff who were genuinely kind, and the clean, roomy lobby made a welcoming first impression. The same care carried into the room, which was quiet and comfortable, with the details looked after. The price felt fair for the quality. It's the sort of dependable place that makes me want to return, and I think it deserves real praise.

The breakfast was good, but at nearly $400 a night with all the fees during peak Spring Break, I expected better. We stayed in mid March. The bed and shower were clean, but the bathroom floor and couch were filthy, with two-inch black hairs scattered across the floor and even some on the counter. I was also disappointed that the lobby store didn't have beer or wine for purchase.

Everyone we'd met during the week had been very friendly, so the encounter with Marlon in maintenance on the morning of March 11th was jarring. My mother and I were smoking in the designated outdoor area when he came over rudely and aggressively, motioning us toward the parking lot and telling us to smoke there instead. He said the area was for cigarettes only. If that had been the rule, we would have followed it, but no one else had said so all week, and we'd seen other people smoking there. We asked what his role was and why he was singling us out. We also tried to explain that employees had walked by us without issue and that we were following the checkout rules. He walked away while we were still talking, then ignored us without explaining further. Aside from that, this is a wonderful place to stay.
