ANTS everywhere. I waited to post this until my $200 deposit came back, since that felt like the first red flag. The host, Vince, seemed to me like someone who might make something up to keep part of the deposit after a bad review. I booked before reading the Google reviews, so I missed the accounts of other guests' problems. I thought I'd have the whole place to myself, but I only got a private room. Noise carried everywhere: people walking around, laundry running, showers, and even constant dripping after a shower ended. The other residents can make or break a stay. On the first night, ants were crawling all over the baseboards. There was a huge pile under the bed's baseboard, so I figured the cleaner must have known about the infestation. I told Vince right away and asked for a refund so I could stay elsewhere. He said he'd tell the cleaner, then said there was ant spray under the bathroom sink. There wasn't. Even if there had been, I wouldn't want to sleep right after spraying. I've dealt with infestations before, and spraying only gives a temporary fix, so I kept asking to leave and get a refund. The ants also made me wonder about the bed's cleanliness, including possible bed bugs. It felt like keeping the $300-400 profit mattered more to Vince than helping me. I put up with it for the night. He said the cleaner would come the next day, but no one showed, and there was no follow-up during my six days and five nights. The ants stayed. If there's one positive, they were much quieter than the other residents at this property, Room #1 at the Harry Potter suites. If you stay, try using the Taylor Ave/Galer St bus stop. It's a short walk. Google Maps may suggest Aurora Ave/Galer St because it's quicker, but that route has a huge flight of steps. At night, it also felt extremely sketchy and dangerous. The neighborhood seems to have mostly college residents, so it doesn't feel as dangerous as it probably should.
The room is small, but it's fine if all you need is somewhere to sleep, and the location is great. I stayed for two weeks and never got any cleaning service. They also kept $20 from my deposit, claiming the remote was missing. I didn't take it, and I can't see why I would. It feels like a dishonest way to add fees, especially since I saw other guests mention similar experiences. Be careful.
My room itself was clean, the bed was comfortable, and the shower got nice and hot. The kitchen had a reasonable selection of cookware and plates, but there was only one spoon, and you'll need labels if you want to store food in the shared fridge. The shared spaces had lots of dents and scrapes, dirty floors, and bags of trash left in the kitchen every day. Read the listing closely: it's a private bedroom in a house with a shared kitchen and living room, and there are seven private rooms. The walls are paper thin, so you can hear everything across all four floors. Also, there are three staircases. The low price makes more sense once you know what you're getting.
The host was friendly over text, but there was nobody on site to help right away. After checkout, they charged me another $20 and still won't explain why. On the last day the AC stopped working, so we had to come up with a temporary fix ourselves. Parking was a nightmare, with the nearest spot I found a 15-minute walk away. The property's name gave me the wrong idea when I booked. The room was small and not very clean, and the thin walls let through every sound from nearby rooms, even late at night. I'm also puzzled by a cleaning fee when the rooms don't seem thoroughly cleaned. After booking, they emailed a link asking for extra payments and a lot of personal details, including flight-ticket information if traveling by air. That felt excessive. At checkout, they examined everything closely, which made me uneasy about possible extra charges. That's how it went for me, though others may have a different experience. I wouldn't stay here again.
We booked three nights while waiting to board a cruise, but the listing left out important details and was highly misleading. There was no parking near the building. We drove around at least a four-block radius without finding anything. The house sits behind another large house, with no driveway, and you can't even see it. We got a passcode for the entrance and room but never made it to the room. After walking in and climbing about 20 steps to the shared area, we found someone sleeping on the couch and food and trash everywhere. We turned around and drove off to find somewhere acceptable, which ended up being another 40 minutes closer to the airport. Expedia contacted the property about the problems, but the property wouldn't cancel the reservation or offer any refund. We also asked about releasing our $200 security deposit and were rudely told to call the bank, then they hung up. I hope people read this before booking. I wouldn't want anyone else dealing with the same trouble.
