The Wilde Resort and Spa

We were at The Wilde Resort this week. Around 1:00 AM on 2/8, we found an insect on the pillow that appeared to be a bedbug. We called the front desk right away and asked to change rooms, which we did in the middle of the night. We couldn’t get back to sleep. We spent the night checking every corner of the new room, and it ruined our plans for the next day. The response afterward made things worse. No one reached out the following day. After we got home, we emailed the hotel twice with clear photos of the insect and asked for an explanation and follow-up. We got no answer, not even an apology. I’ve had ongoing itching and skin irritation since that night, which adds to my concern. I’m sharing this so other guests can be aware and take precautions. If you decide to stay, inspect for bedbugs. Update, 2/13: The hotel received our emails but left them unanswered for five days. They only replied after we mentioned escalating or reporting the issue and posted a Google review. The inspection happened after we had checked out, not on the day of the incident. This isn’t how a serious health and safety concern should be handled. I’m describing only what we saw and experienced. You can look at the photo and make your own judgment.

Everything at the resort was in good shape: the room was clean, grounds were well kept, and the pool and hot tubs were nice. The restaurant was convenient and very good, the views were cool, and the location was fantastic. The employees were pleasant and helpful, especially Cruz at the front desk. We also went to one of the scheduled activities, a stargazing and astronomy talk. We’d return. The four-star rating comes down to the spa. My wife booked a massage months ahead, filled out the preference forms the day before, and got confirmation. When she arrived, they said no masseuse was available. They offered to reschedule or provide a different treatment, but that was the only time we had available, and she wanted a massage. We went shopping in town and made the best of it, but it was still very disappointing.

The fireplace gave our spacious Suncatcher King room a nice, warm feel, and we enjoyed the view of the Capitol vortex. The price was a little below other Sedona resorts advertised as 4-star, and being part of the Amex Hotel Collection was ultimately why we booked. Still, the stay felt more like a mid-range hotel than a 4-star property. There wasn’t a pleasant spot on site to get coffee or a quick snack. The restaurant had a very limited menu and seating, and after eating there on check-in day, we didn’t feel like going back. The in-room coffee was poor, so we walked next door to Safeway for Starbucks, the only decent coffee option nearby. Sedona is expensive, but price alone doesn’t justify a higher rating. For comfort, amenities, and dining, I think this property fits somewhere between 2.5 and 3 stars. Calling it a 4-star hotel felt misleading.

The steam room was great, and the location was nice. My room was very clean, with the most comfortable bed I had in Arizona. Breakfast at Mascal was just okay and not worth the price. The front desk woman didn’t greet or acknowledge me when I came into the lobby, so I had to start the conversation. She seemed like she didn’t want to be there or be bothered. Aside from that, I’d definitely stay again. I hope the female front desk staff get customer service and hospitality training. Thank you.
