Murray Hotel

The old downtown has had a real art renaissance, and many of its old storefronts now have shops. There’s plenty to do nearby, from hiking, wineries, Cliff Dwellings, a lake, the city of Rock State park, and the Catwalk. A good brew pub with bar food is about a block and a half away, and a good coffee shop is the same distance in the other direction. The hotel’s also within walking distance of everything in the old downtown. This is a restored hotel from the 1800s, and the work has been done really well. It has a charming feel and was enjoyable overall. It was generally clean and quiet, and the staff were supportive. The mattresses were in good shape, all the lamps worked, and the towels seemed fairly new. There are some drawbacks: shower pressure is low and the water temperature varies, there are very few TV channels and reception can be poor, and there’s no parking lot, so you have to park on the street.

One thing to know is that the Murray doesn’t have a parking lot, so you’ll need to park on the street. Still, we’d definitely stay there again next time we’re in Silver City. The location near old town couldn’t be beat, and the place was clean and comfortable. Breakfast and coffee were very good. P.S. Don’t miss the Jalisco Cafe for great Mexican fare! It exceeded our expectations.

There are tons of fun places to see and eat within walking distance, so I’d definitely stay here again. They welcomed my dog, which was wonderful, and the staff were phenomenal and genuinely helpful. The bed called a “queen” was actually full sized, noticeably narrower and shorter than the queen I sleep on at home, so I have a basis for comparison. That was disappointing. At least the mattress was newer and didn’t sag in the middle. Next time, I’ll make sure I get a queen and not a full. A wonderful stay at this quaint hotel, and a definite do-again for me!

Silver City and the Murray Hotel were really interesting, and I wish I’d had more time there. My daughter and I heard a mobile phone ringing and then being put on hold in the third-floor hall. We figured it must be a 21st-century ghost who died waiting on hold.
