For anyone who skis, Snowshoe rocks. In my 23 years skiing, it's far and away the best East Coast mountain I've visited, aside from New England and Lake Placid/Whiteface in Upstate NY. I've also ridden out West and in Europe. The runs are decently long, snowmaking is great, the staff are friendly, and there was almost a weekly snowstorm from MLK weekend onward. Like every East Coast mountain, it's much better with real snow and the whole mountain open, so plan accordingly. My girlfriend and I had a great long weekend ski trip in January 2026, staying in a fourth-floor studio. The price felt a bit steep, but the VRBO photos matched the unit very closely. Mountaintop Condos communicated well about check-in and checkout. Since we arrived late, we had to check in at Top of the World, five minutes away by car. The owners and Mountaintop Condos had let us know several times, days ahead. Earlier arrivals check in at Allegheny Springs. At Top of the World we could check in and print our lift tickets at once, which was great. Bring your own food, drinks, snacks, toiletries, and shower soap. What's provided varies by unit, since this is a condo building rather than a hotel. Most rooms don't have burners, so don't expect to cook much. The location is hard to beat, with a ski locker room and lobby doors leading both into the village and onto the slopes. It really is ski-in, ski-out. Highland House could use renovation. There was just one communal hot tub for the whole building, and it wasn't very hot. The sauna was surprisingly clean, as was the hot tub. Some first-floor lockers were rusted through at the bottom, so we only stored our skis there. Even with those issues, we'd definitely choose Highland House again.

The Village isn't very accessible for wheelchair users. The thresholds are so high that rolling into the buildings isn't possible, and the manual doors are difficult when one person is in the wheelchair and the other is pushing. Highland House's tunnel was the only smooth transition we found. At Split Rock pool, several doors lead to the pool deck, and one door from the check-in/lobby area slammed into both my heels on the way in and out. Its sharp edge didn't cut me, but it left a bruise.

The best features were the ski-in and ski-out access and the ski locker. The toilet flushed well, the gas fireplace was nice, and the deck was useful for putting trash bags out, since there were no instructions inside or outside on how to handle waste. The rest was disappointing: terrible check-in, just one working elevator for more than 100 units, old spring beds, and cramped living quarters.

The convenient access to shops and restaurants earned the two stars. Room 409 is spacious, but badly needs updating. Nearly everything felt worn, from the surfaces and fixtures to furniture and linens, along with some appliances, including the washer/dryer and dishwasher. The main bathroom shower had terrible water pressure, and the sliding deck door didn't shut properly, letting wind noise make the condo incredibly loud. The carpet was soiled enough that I didn't want to walk on it barefoot. The decor was dated and a confusing mix of themes, and the lower lobby had a strong bad odor.

Highland House 209 had no working air conditioning during 86-degree summer weather. It actually blew hot air, making the room worse. The listing said parking was in the garage beside Highland House, but that was false, and we had to park almost two miles away. Management never addressed our concerns. I'm never booking again.
