Doubletree Hotel South Bend

I’m a diamond member and have stayed at many Hilton properties. Most have been great, and I’d stayed at Double Tree South Bend twice before this disappointing visit, January 16-18th 2026. After a 10 hour flight, I couldn’t get a proper rest. There was no hot water on Saturday, and all weekend the hotel was chaotic because kids from five hockey teams ran around causing havoc. I’m not putting all the blame on the staff. The chaperones and parents should have watched them, and some adults with the teams were encouraging the chaos and chasing kids around. A few of the children did have manners and weren’t involved. Staff tried to get things under control, but I blame them for not giving the chaperones or parents an ultimatum: control the kids or be asked to leave. We’re paying customers too, and it wasn’t fair that we didn’t get what we paid for because of those unruly, disrespectful kids and parents. Double Tree, you need to do better for all your patrons, not just a few!

We paid extra for a corner room with a view, but the windows were dirty and had broken seals, so we could barely see out. The room itself was large and updated, and I liked that the floor was laminate instead of carpet, which felt cleaner. Still, there was construction dust everywhere. We couldn’t swim because the pool was closed, something the site didn’t mention, though it did say to pardon the construction. The showers were cold, and we had to park our Suburban in a cramped lot with very few spaces for large vehicles. After a concert, we got back late and found it full, so we had to work out parking a block away in a public lot. There was no microwave in the room, and the hallway carpet outside our door badly needed vacuuming. We came to relax, swim, and enjoy Valentine's weekend, but it was an aggravating weekend instead. I wish I’d checked the reviews, and I wouldn’t recommend staying until the repairs are done.

The employees were friendly, and the Starbucks inside the hotel is awesome. The restaurant food was delicious and reasonably priced, but the place was badly understaffed. We waited over 30 minutes to be served on a Saturday night, with five groups and one person at the bar. The servers need help. One morning my dad was the only customer, yet a waitress sent him to the back of the restaurant to pour his own coffee. There was remodeling mess all over, with toilets visible in windows and broken dressers and old furniture piled in the parking garage. They could have used temporary walls to cover it. The garage also had exposed wiring and a broken PVC pipe that kept leaking. One morning there were beer bottles and liquor glasses all over the lobby. Weekend food delivery through DoorDash, Uber, and similar services can take a while. On our first night, we arrived late, showered with hot water, then found yellow grime on the towels and yellow stuff on the sinks. We were told it came from a leak in the ceiling from the room above. We and the people above us had to repack and change rooms. The second room was great, but we had to call the engineer back about its air-conditioning unit. He and the lobby staff were very nice. How are people rating this hotel 5/5? Compared to what?

The rooms looked nice and were clean, and the staff were great and tried their best to accommodate me. But there was no hot water. I don’t mean just not very hot, it was barely lukewarm, and I was freezing enough to turn the heat way up. They offered another room on the same floor, with the same result. They then offered to move me again, but couldn’t promise the water would be any different because they were working through a new system. A hot shower is non-negotiable at a hotel of this caliber. Bummed!
