Holiday Inn Express South Hill-Lacrosse

A hot shower, a soft bed and some quiet made it easy to recharge after a long drive. The rooms are simple, clean and comfortable, and the hotel sits just off Interstate 85 and U.S. Route 58 in South Hill, Virginia. It’s a convenient stop with no detours, parking that’s easy, and a pool. It felt safe and relaxed. There isn’t a party scene here, which is fine. It’s a place to rest between driving and getting back on the road. Breakfast was a real treat: hot, flavorful coffee, an omelet, savory meat patties, crispy fried potatoes and fresh waffles made at the iron. It was hearty and satisfying, and included in the stay. This felt like a warm blanket and a good breakfast on a long trip. We stopped, rested and ate well, and the road ahead felt lighter.

My only complaint is that checkout exists. The bed was so comfortable I woke up wondering if the mattress had adopted me, and the room was cleaner than my own house has ever been. The staff were friendlier than some of my relatives. I came for one night and seriously thought about changing my address. Looking for a place to stay? You found it. I can’t help with a reason not to.

The free breakfast was out by 5:30 a.m. and had plenty to choose from: eggs, grits, sausage patties and links, gravy, a waffle station, oatmeal, yogurt, bread, coffee and cappuccino, and juice. The attendants were kind, and there’s a tip box. The morning desk person was a joy, and everyone greeted me with a smile. They seemed to enjoy their jobs and were friendly, genuine, personable and hospitable. The hotel is older but immaculate, and the room was clean and comfortable, with a great TV and channel options. There’s also a well-equipped fitness center. It’s near Walmart, Starbucks, gas stations and food options. I was traveling early to get ahead of a storm, and called to ask if I could check in early. They told me to come on in, take care, and that they’d be waiting for me. That meant a lot while I was pushing through bad weather and worried about my safety. I completed e-check-in online and uploaded my ID, so I only had to pick up the keys at the desk. The front desk showed that same genuine care when I arrived. A perfect, safe stay as a woman traveling alone.

I got my booking wrong, but Marion at the front desk went above and beyond to get it straightened out. She was friendly, professional, and clearly cared that my stay went smoothly. Outstanding service, and a great example of hospitality. Thank you, Marion!
