Desolation Hotel

Traveling with a dog, I found Desolation Hotel to be one of the most dog-friendly places I’ve stayed. Dogs are truly welcomed, from check-in to relaxing around the property, and feel like part of the experience. Maggie's on site is dog friendly too. The staff clearly love dogs, and it was great to enjoy an exceptional meal without leaving ours behind. With Maggie’s outstanding food and cocktails and the hotel’s relaxed, modern feel and thoughtful touches for dogs, it’s a real win for anyone traveling with a four-legged companion. South Lake Tahoe has plenty of choices, but this combination stands out if dog friendliness matters to you.

The townhome was incredibly cozy, and felt luxurious without being precious. We loved the outdoor tub and indoor jacuzzi, and the beds were comfortable. There was even a charger in the private garage. Maggie's had delicious food at reasonable prices. The hotel's name made me expect somewhere remote, but it sits among lower quality hotels and is towered over by casinos. Somehow, the property still creates the feeling of a winter oasis. I loved staying here, though I wish the location felt less desolate, even with the Heavenly gondola nearby.

We’ve been to Desolation twice and love the Alpine and Granite suites. The Granite suite feels very private. I especially like the fireplaces in the bedroom and main living area, the heated bathroom floors, and the soaking tub on the back deck. The private sauna is a big favorite too, and Maggie’s is yummy. I’ve recommended it to a couple of friends.

We’d stayed several times at a pricier hotel around the corner when visiting SLT, so earlier this week we tried Desolation Hotel for a couple of nights. The ‘Townhouse’ room was great, spread over three levels: garage, living space, and bedroom. It had two decks, one with an outdoor dining table and one with a soaking tub, plus a fully equipped kitchen, 1.5 bathrooms, two fireplaces, and a proper garage. Check-in was pleasant and efficient, and came with a complimentary bottle of wine. It’s close to the beach and Heavenly Village, and feels like having your own vacation home. The hotel has Maggie’s restaurant, a pool, and a spa. If you can do without some amenities of a larger resort, such as big public areas, resort fees, and parking charges, it’s ideal. My only complaint was the slightly marginal motels around the neighborhood. Otherwise, it was great. We’d recommend it and will return.
