TownePlace Suites by Marriott Memphis Southaven

The bed was comfortable and the room was relatively clean, but this was one of the worst Marriott properties I’ve stayed at. There was no shampoo because the whole bottle had been removed from the wall, the body wash pump was broken, and we had to call for a hair dryer. Someone brought one up, and apparently they get stolen a lot. The room was also missing forks and a luggage rack, and the Wi-Fi didn’t work. There are lots of restaurants nearby, though almost all are fast food or fast casual, which isn’t what we like. Highway noise was also an issue. Memphis has better places to stay, but hotel rates are higher there and the taxes are about twice as much as in Mississippi.

The hotel is beautiful, and some of the staff are friendly, but the cleanliness needs major work. My first room smelled of cigarette smoke and was filthy. There were crumbs on the bed, litter all over the carpet, and strange substances stuck to furniture. The second room was no better: trash had been left by the previous guest, the carpet didn’t look vacuumed, the vinyl floors were sticky, and the shower was dirty and drained so slowly I stood in water with someone else’s straight black hair in it. My hair is red and curly. The hallway floors looked awful too, and dirty towels stayed on the gym floor for two days. None of the gym’s five machines worked. I might not have written a review after all that, but the checkout morning made things worse. At 7 AM I requested a 12 PM late checkout through the app so I could sleep after a rough night, and a staff member confirmed it. Then at 11:10 AM a housekeeper banged on my door like the police. I told her about the late checkout, and she rudely asked what time. The front desk should have passed that on so I wouldn’t be disturbed for no reason. Please do better for your guests. A couple of improvements could turn this place around.

This crew gave outstanding customer service from check-in to check-out. It doesn’t cost anything to treat people well. Thanks, and keep up the outstanding service.

The people were friendly, and the rooms were comfortable and clean. Highway noise was the one downside. Once you fall asleep it’s fine, but before that I had to turn the TV up pretty loud to hear over the passing cars.
