Penny Farthing Inn

The breakfasts were made from scratch and tasted great. They were served from 0830 to 0930, with a set menu that changes daily, though you can speak up about dietary restrictions. I'd suggest getting a table as soon as breakfast starts. Parking is tight but manageable if you're okay backing out of the lot. Ellie was looking after the Penny while I was there, and she was caring and welcoming. This is the most comfortable B&B I've stayed at over the years. My room had a balcony/porch overlooking the quiet street where the Penny sits, a nice place to relax with coffee in the morning or a drink in the evening. There's a lovely British feel and classic old-home charm. If you're after a modern, recently built VRBO/AIRB&B, this won't be the place for you. Downtown sights are a short walk away, but the house is far enough from the bustle to enjoy some peace and quiet.

This was my second stay at Penny Farthing B&B, and I loved it just as much as the first. The location meant I didn't need my car at all while I was there. Elle deserves 5+ Stars for the way she handled nearly everything, from check-in and housekeeping to cooking, always with a wonderful smile.

We picked the property for its location, close to the action but on a quiet street. That's where the good news stopped. I'd pass on it, since there are other places worth your money. Getting replies before the stay took two attempts on two separate questions, and the messages felt blunt instead of warm. One employee was pleasant, but the other, who greeted us, seemed unhappy and made a poor first impression. Breakfast was fine, but the outdoor table covers were faded, ripped, and filthy. One morning the server brought spray cleaner and tried to clean the cover while we were seated and food was coming out. That should have been done before guests arrived. The shower was difficult and felt unsafe to get in and out of. I understand an older house can have charm, but this was a problem. The exterior also needs major attention: the driveway is extremely narrow, the grounds and plants were unkempt, and the house needs a handyman ASAP.

We had no hot water for showers on our first night. Staff weren't there when we tried to reach them, and when they finally responded, they said we'd have to wait until morning. They said we'd get a discount, but that never came, and they were hard to contact. There was mold on the shower curtain, the photos were misleading, and the place felt run down. For the 700 I spent on two nights, it wasn't worth it. There are better places in the same area. Don't go here.
