We love this hotel, and it was a great spot for Winter Carnival. Our room had a kitchen with dishes and wine glasses, plus a mini fridge with a freezer. I actually preferred the standard room we had on our previous visit, though. We couldn’t use a gift card toward the room, and the guy who checked us in was grumpy, but another person at the desk was nice. The housekeeping staff were lovely. Breakfast is free and nice, though you’ll want to bring your own mug since they only have disposable cups. There’s also a recycling bin in the room, which was a nice touch. The hotel occupies the building’s top floors, and the St. Paul athletic club has great wet and dry saunas and really nice facilities.

The rooms have a real old-fashioned feel, right down to the metal keys you use to lock and unlock the door. Remember to lock up when you leave. I was with a big group, and our rooms varied a lot in size. In some, the toilet was separate from the shower, and the beds were squeezed against walls among other little obstacles. It’s all part of the experience. The building itself is beautiful, with incredible architecture, chandeliers, and ceilings you can get lost in. There are nice TVs and good views from the upper floors. I enjoyed my stay.

Joe (with a bow) at the front desk was so welcoming and friendly, and I got a free room upgrade, which was a lovely surprise. The room was well looked after despite the building’s antique look, and the real key and lock on the door were charming. The fitness center was clean, well maintained, and a good size. There are lots of good restaurants within an easy walk. This was probably one of my best hotel stays, and I’d gladly come back.

The building is a beautiful venue, but the hotel itself is an absolute dump. This is only about the hotel portion. The elevators weren’t working, so we had to climb 12 flights of stairs twice. The stairways were unmarked and unlit, and power tools, cords, and other things blocked several floors. Our rooms were musty and dirty, with tiny sinks and toilets, and they weren’t stocked. There wasn’t anyone working for the hotel on site. Someone sat at the front desk, but was quick to say they didn’t work there. Don’t stay here.

We booked at the last minute because of a snowstorm, and I’m so glad we did. The front desk women were incredibly friendly and went out of their way to help us get around the area. The building’s dark wood and beautiful architecture give it a castle feel, helped along by the dimmer lighting. Our room was small, but had more character than any hotel room I’ve stayed in. It came with a kitchenette, basic dishes and silverware, and a cute reading nook that suited my inner book nerd. Breakfast was great, and it’s worth walking through the fitness club. Best hotel I’ve stayed in, and I’d recommend it to anyone.
