Lafayette Inn

The classic rooms had the charm we were hoping for, and the shower was great. Breakfast in the dining room was excellent, too. We got to talk with Alan and his wife about the property’s history, and we’d happily stay again. We came after the Montpelier Steeplechase races and chose the inn for its charm and proximity to the track. Alan answered our questions promptly before we arrived, and the after-hours check-in around 8PM was easy. He greeted us while we picked up our room envelopes, showed us where to go, and said he’d see us at breakfast. He’s also the chef. We saw the outdoor cats mentioned in another review. Staff care for them and take them to the local vet for checkups and vaccines. Nobody in our group noticed any odor inside or outside, including the person among us who’s especially particular about that.

The owner was so nice, and breakfast was filling and delicious. Our room was clean and spacious, with its own outside entrance, which I liked. We came for a one-night getaway and found it had everything we wanted in a historic bed-and-breakfast. I wouldn’t hesitate to stay again next time we’re in town. We noticed a few outdoor cats. I’m generally not a cat person, but they didn’t bother me or put me off the place.

We had a two-night reservation in the “cottage” and arrived five minutes before the 4:00 PM check-in, but no one answered the door or phone. We waited in the parking lot until 4:30 and still got no response. A broken cottage window, the urine smell, and a dozen feral cats convinced us to stay elsewhere. We’re demanding a full refund. They need to get out of the hotel business.

The owners and their felines were so warm and welcoming. The food, room, and atmosphere were all amazing, and the meals were delicious. I highly recommend staying and eating here. We’ll be back next year!
