We arrived late in the afternoon and left in the morning, so this place worked perfectly, especially for the price. Parking was easy and free from 6 p.m. to 10 a.m., and we left our car and things just outside while walking around town, then heading to dinner and a nice bar. There's a great bakery and breakfast place right next door. The historic house is in the heart of Main Street in Truckee, and the fully online booking and entry process was efficient and simple. It's basically a boarding house with dorm style rooms and shared bathrooms, though we booked Room 11, a ground floor room with its own bathroom. It was very clean and in excellent condition, with a nice bed, good sheets, and a comforter. The room was tiny, just enough space to walk around the bed, so a large suitcase would be hard to fit inside, but you could make do.

The hostel's central spot puts shops and restaurants nearby, along with Amtrak and the shuttle to Northstar. My teenager and his friends recently stayed there on their own, and as a parent I was nervous. The staff were incredibly helpful and communicative before and during arrival, and made sure the boys felt safe right away. Thank you, Rodrigo and Zach! The place was exceptionally clean and modern, with a warm, welcoming feel. It's rare to find that kind of fun atmosphere along with such attentive, professional service. Thanks to the whole team for giving me peace of mind.

We found the shared refrigerator and microwave handy, and the instructions posted around the building made everything easy to figure out. Our room, linens, hallways, and bathrooms were clean, and the location was great, with lots of cafes and restaurants within walking distance. The Greyhound bus and Amtrak stops are nearby, too. Every so often you can hear locomotives honking, but that's what comes with staying in a historic rail town. We had a good stay at West River House and will definitely return.

The online photos didn't do this lovely little place justice. The rooms and bathrooms were clean and quaint, and we loved how cozy it was. Such a great, inexpensive place to stay.

The common areas were a highlight, with a fridge and comfy couches, and the bathrooms were spotless. I stayed from Wednesday night to Sunday morning and had an amazing time. The beds were incredibly comfortable, too. You can't beat the location, about fifteen minutes from Palisades Tahoe and a five-minute walk to downtown Truckee. I'd highly recommend this hostel to anyone visiting the area.
