Fern Grotto Inn

We stayed in Canal B for four nights in May 2026. The room was clean, and we loved sitting on the enclosed porch while it rained. A short walk across the road brought us to the beach for some amazing sunrises. The hosts were welcoming and accommodating, even though we never met them, and had provided everything we needed and then some. We borrowed chairs and towels one day, then a kayak and cooler the next. The Fern Grotto was a beautiful short paddle upriver. Being able to do laundry for free on site was a lifesaver. We enjoyed the vegetarian food around Kapaa and elsewhere on Kauai, and found the town charming. It was a convenient base, about equally distant from the other two main places we wanted to visit. We’ll definitely stay at the Fern Grotto Inn again when we return.

The small group of rentals feels cozy and private, and it’s a real gem compared with a big resort. We loved our six nights in Coco C. The flowers in the room and treats left in the fridge were such lovely extras. The studio has windows on two sides with pretty views, and the grounds are gorgeous with lots of amenities to enjoy. We slept well despite the roosters, with the Venetian glass down and the AC or fan on. Lydgate beach is a mile away by car. We walked there at sunrise each morning and snorkeled most afternoons. Kauai is beautiful, and its people and culture are just as lovely. We’d recommend the Smith family Luau, Common Grounds farm to table, and the Lydgate Cacao farm tour. We’ll be back!

The Ohana House at Fern Grotto Inn is a beautiful property, and we’d happily stay there again. It was well stocked, especially the full kitchen, and the complimentary beers and chocolate macadamia nuts were a nice touch. For our family of four, having a whole home was a welcome change from squeezing into a small hotel room. We took the bikes to nearby Lydgate Beach to snorkel, using our own gear, though some is available to borrow. We also brought the beach chairs and towels to different beaches. The kayaks took us to the Secret Falls trailhead, and we packed lunch in one of the coolers.

The free gear really made our stay, with kayaks, bikes, beach equipment, snorkels, and more to borrow. Fern Grotto Inn is quiet, quaint, and cozy, and its east side location makes trips to Poipu or the north shore easy. It has the kind of character that feels more like Kauai. I can’t believe people pay two or three times as much for a plain, cookie-cutter hotel room when they could stay somewhere with this much heart and soul.
