JW Marriott Washington DC

The staff made the stay easy, with friendly, professional help from check-in through checkout and attentive service that never felt intrusive. Rooms were quiet and well kept, a comfortable place to come back to after being out in the city. The lobby is stylish and modern, with room to meet or relax. JW Marriott Washington, DC is also in a very convenient spot, steps from the White House and within walking distance of the National Mall, museums, and monuments. A dependable choice for sightseeing or business in the capital.

We had a great stay, and the gentleman at check-in was so nice. Our room had a king bed and a nice monument view. I especially liked the shower setup, since the handle is off to the side and you don't get sprayed while turning it on. The National Theater was a short walk away for our show, and the location also worked well for the Washington Monument and Smithsonians. Most things were about 15 minutes on foot, with the Capitol closer to a 30-minute walk. We skipped the pricey valet and parked in a garage on the same block instead. It was around $70 for three days, compared with $72 plus 18% tax per day for valet. We'll definitely come back.

The location is the standout here: you can walk to the Mall, monuments, and some really good restaurants. The lobby is nice, service was good, and a room facing the monuments has a great view. The rooms themselves feel dated and fairly small, with bathrooms that are small and old-fashioned too. They were usable, just below what I'd expect from a JW. Marriott bookings can vary a lot by property owner, so this JW is fine, though if you want a more upscale cocktail setting, the Willard across the way feels more premium.

I booked one night and asked for a balcony, but the check-in clerk said it would cost another $250. As a Marriott Ambassador member, I expected better after giving Marriott so much of my time and money, and I thought upgrades came with the status. The reception staff were rude and incompetent. When I asked to see my room, the clerk wouldn't hold my luggage and said I had to take it with me with the bellman. The room was small, dark, and depressing. I left without an apology or any solution. I've stayed at around 20 Marriotts in the area, and this one was the worst for rude staff, unaccommodating suggestions, and terrible rooms. Shame on you, JW.
