Jack made me feel welcome as soon as I arrived at the Kalorama Guest House, and it’s clear he cares about his guests. He keeps a coffee bar available through the day and bakes cookies, and breakfast each morning had a lot to choose from: breads and bagels, eggs, bacon, sausage, yogurt, fresh fruit, oatmeal, cereal, coffee, milk, and juice. The house dates to 1910 and is quite large, with what I think are 10 or 11 bedrooms. I had a Twin bed in a clean room on the bottom floor and shared a clean bathroom. The whole house was very well maintained. It felt safe and was easy to get around on foot, with dining and shops just a couple of blocks away. The Metro Red Line near the Zoo is also close by. I’ll be back in DC before long, and I’ve already decided to stay here again. Thanks, Jack!

Jack is what made this stay work for us. He was such a warm host that he made us feel at home, and the friendly people staying there added to that feeling. He had a nice breakfast buffet and hot drinks available around the clock. When we left, he told us, "This is your home," which really summed it up. The place itself is old, with very basic amenities. Our room was small and difficult to clean, the window AC was noisy, and both the floor in the room and the outside stairs creaked. We were on the second floor and woke each morning to strong kitchen smells coming up. It’s an eight-minute walk to the nearest Metro station and quite far from the main sights, so doing that walk twice a day added up. I would have rated it one or two stars if not for Jack.

We were looking for somewhere in DC or Maryland for our wedding after getting church quotes that were way beyond our budget. My fiance found the Kalorama Guest House while searching for local Bed and Breakfasts, and from our first conversation Jack was professional and really helpful. The house felt right immediately: intimate and small, with the home-like atmosphere we wanted. Jack explained the requirements clearly from the start and helped us consider different reception options. We ended up using the lobby/waiting area for the reception, and he even helped get Room 101 ready for the ceremony. He also helped family members find places to stay for the wedding weekend. Our guests loved the Kalorama Guest House, and the wedding and reception were wonderful, exactly what we hoped for. We made the right choice getting married there, and recommend it to anyone planning to marry IN the District.

A nice touch was having fresh fruit and cookies, and the manager was very pleasant. The rooms feel homey and attractive, with plenty of books on the shelves. There were a couple of practical annoyances in room #301. The toilet was tiny, fine for an 8-10 year old maybe, but uncomfortable for someone over 6' tall. There wasn’t an outlet near the desk or another flat surface, so I had to shift the bed to plug anything in. An extension cord would help. And why was Fox news always on the TV downstairs? It would be better left off unless someone is actually watching.

Jack was quick to help and really attentive throughout my visit. He clearly wants guests to be comfortable. This was my first time at a bed and breakfast, and he’s set a high bar for any future stays. There are lots of good restaurants within walking distance of the guesthouse. I’d stay at the Kalorama again and recommend it to anyone visiting DC.
