I was unsure at first about staying somewhere that wasn't a chain, but the cozy lobby and crackling fire won me over. My one-night stop at the historic Penn Wells Hotel broke up a long drive nicely. It's been lovingly maintained, and although the rooms are simple, they're comfortable, with firm mattresses, good sheets and towels, and comfy armchairs. Dinner in the busy hotel bar was a pleasure. The included breakfast in the main dining room was simple but good, and I appreciated that coffee was available there from 5:00 a.m. Wellsboro seems like a pleasant small town with much of its downtown intact. The Penn Wells would make a great base for exploring the town and surrounding area.

The hotel is beautiful and feels like a place from another era, right on the main street among little storefronts. Its location is great, and the staff were helpful with questions or anything we needed. Our front room could get terribly noisy from truck traffic passing through at all hours, so bring earplugs. Breakfast was okay, with the same items each day. I skipped it and had dinner in town on the last day. The Octoberfest dinner was excellent, so I imagine the other dinners are good too. The bathroom needs some work: the bathtub faucet leaked, though the water pressure was good and there was plenty of hot water.

Everyone was courteous and polite, and the rooms were clean and very well maintained. The included breakfast was very good, and the restaurant serves excellent food. As usual, a first-class hotel. Thanks to everyone for making our stay memorable.

The room felt dated and a bit small, with creaky floors and no controls for the AC or heat in the room. I was freezing, and as a Florida native had to sleep in my clothes to stay warm. The lobby carpet was filthy and the hallways dim. The place had the kind of vibe that made me think some people may have hanged themselves there.

I didn't stay at the hotel, but stopped to see the historic building. Saidia was working at the front desk and kindly showed my friends, my wife, and me around, and told us about its history. I hope to visit town again and book at the Penn Wells Hotel next time. I'd highly recommend it to anyone interested in history.
