Birdsong and the nearby stream made the grounds feel especially peaceful, with big trees and mountains all around the hollow. The old 150-year-old house is warm and cozy inside, and the furnishings are comfortable. It’s a secluded B&B just outside West Jefferson. We’re already looking forward to coming back and having breakfast.

The breakfasts were a highlight, especially Steve’s banana foster French toast. One guest said she could eat it every day, and I agree. I’d get up around 7:00 AM for coffee on the balcony, then enjoy a great breakfast. Steve is an awesome chef. Steve and Susan made us feel like family, and it was nice hearing the other guests chatting in the morning. I’ve stayed in plenty of places, but this was my favorite. If you want to get away somewhere that feels like home instead of a commercial hotel, Buffalo Tavern is the place. I’m planning to return, and maybe we’ll meet again one of these days. Two very satisfied guests, Rick Goodman and Carol Lowrance.

Breakfast was delicious, and we really enjoyed talking with the other couples there. The room had an antique feel but still felt luxurious. Paps was friendly and got us settled even though we arrived after check-in time. There was a recommendation book in the room with Paps’ nearby suggestions, and they turned out to be great. The old house and furniture carry sound, so the room wasn’t as private as it could be. Even so, we had a lovely visit and hope to come back.

It’s so cozy inside, and the views from up on the hill are beautiful. It feels like being at home, except someone else takes care of the dishes.

The homemade breakfast was the best part. The sausage and biscuits were among the best I’ve had in my 45 years living in NC, and they found options for my wife’s dairy allergy. Paps’ special hot chocolate blend is worth trying too. I wondered if our room might be cold, with temperatures in the mid-20s and four inches of snow on the ground overnight, but we stayed nice and warm. The house’s history was incredible. Can’t wait to return.
