The Avenue Hotel

I’d suggest spending an extra 20 minutes driving to a nicer hotel. We stayed here while helping my brother move into his apartment, after his university listed it as a recommended place to stay. The room looked as if nobody had cleaned it, with a filthy bed sham covered in who knows what, dust on the curtains, peeling ceiling paint, and mold around the shower. The musk smell was obvious when we entered and even stronger on the second floor. The front desk guy was unpleasant and acted like finding us a room was a bother. The phone didn’t work either. To top it off, our card was charged twice, and both charges were higher than the amount he’d quoted. I’d rate it zero if I could. Do not stay here.

The housekeepers and other workers were really nice, and the night staff especially deserve props. The manager, though, is firing many workers, and I worried that things guests confide in them might get reported back because they’re trying not to lose their jobs. The managers are jerks, and I believe they took hundreds of dollars from my card, draining it. They also blamed us for damage that I think came from their workers doing poor work. The appearance of the hotel is very poor, and they’re renovating, waking everyone at dawn with air compressors, nail guns, and drilling into the walls. The water pressure is horrible, the bathroom lighting is poor, and the toilet barely works. Breakfast seemed reused from previous days. Very nice people among the staff, but I wouldn’t trust anyone connected with this hotel business. Don’t come here.

The breakfast wasn’t good. The eggs had an odd texture, and the juice was very watery. The hotel and room were otherwise good and clean, though the bathroom looked quite run down. Our rooms weren’t ready at check-in, which was frustrating since we hadn’t arrived early.

The breakfast selection was awful and limited, and the lobby and dining area looked like they hadn’t been cleaned in a while, with dirt and paper scattered on the carpet. In the lobby bathroom there was a shared bar of soap and a roll of paper towels instead of dispensers. My room was okay but a bit dingy, and when the TV remote didn’t work, the staff seemed annoyed that I wanted the TV fixed. They moved me to another room. I called Best Western to complain and learned this place had stopped being a Best Western in November 2016, though it was still using the name to attract customers. You won’t get Best Western Rewards points either.
