The Waves Hotel, an Ascend Collection Hotel

The location was great, and we could walk to the pier and beach. For the price, it wasn't the worst, and the room had plenty of amenities, including a fridge, microwave, iron, and safe. But I wouldn't say it matched the photos. Maybe peak season is the way to go, since our off-season visit wasn't great. There were huge concrete piles by the parking area under the hotel, and no manager on duty, just a sign telling us to call. The room was dirty, with hair in the shower, a door that looked kicked in, and mold growing on the bathroom wall. I assume the mold contributed to the awful smell when we entered, which improved a little after we turned on the air. The bed was hard as a rock. There was no notice that breakfast was only available during peak season.

The room door had a completely broken hinge, so we had to lift it every time we wanted it to shut. The bathroom and ceiling channels had rust, and the chair and ottoman were stained enough that I wouldn't recommend sitting there. The hotel was also very loud; we could hear everything. There was no security. The back door to the stairwell was standing wide open, and we kept thinking about it after someone ran through the front of the building at 3 a.m. with police chasing him. Police and EMTs stayed outside for quite a while. At 6 a.m., a broken shower curtain woke us up. Things happen, but then at 8 a.m. someone knocked to ask where our car was because a truck had blocked another guest's car. My wife was unhappy to be woken again. Parking was awful, especially with that sort of issue; it seems like it'll keep happening. I don't usually write reviews, but this stay was quite something.

My husband and I came to Cape May for the first time for our anniversary, and I'm so glad we stayed here. The room was clean and modern, the heater and air conditioning worked efficiently, and the TV had cable. I'd stay here again.

Just steps from the beach and boardwalk, this charming motel made it easy to walk to the sand or head out for boardwalk food, shops, and entertainment. The room was spotless and cozy, with everything I needed, and the staff were welcoming and went out of their way to help. Parking was convenient, and I felt safe and relaxed the whole stay. A hidden gem for a weekend away or a longer beach vacation. I'll definitely be back!
