Hampton Inn & Suites Yonkers

The mattress was good, which is the only reason I’m giving this place a star. The pool was out of order, the third-floor ice machine didn’t work, and there was no shuttle. My iron kept losing heat, water pressure was awful, and after housekeeping serviced the room, we had to ask for toilet paper. Why pay full price when so many amenities can’t be used? There wasn’t even tea in the room, just coffee, and no bottled water. Those are standard for this price range. Breakfast came on paper plates with plastic cutlery, which was horrendous. We’ll be back in the area because we have family in Yonkers, but I won’t stay here again. There are plenty of other hotels around. My husband went to ask the receptionist for help, but she was sitting down eating food she’d taken from the guest buffet. He said he’d come back later so she could enjoy breakfast at the desk. She thanked him and kept eating. I’ve never seen hotel staff eat in public areas or serve themselves from the buffet during a meal period. I’ve stayed at lots of hotels, and this is definitely one of my worst.

I booked one night to use my quarterly Hilton credits before they expired. The woman checking me in was really nice. She asked which floor I preferred and whether I wanted one or two bottles of water. I’m a Gold member. The hotel was very clean, and breakfast was good. The shower door wouldn’t stay shut, so I wedged it with a wash towel. Diamond members get priority parking, and the place seemed well run. I’d stay again to use my quarterly Hilton credits.

We didn’t feel comfortable at this hotel, and none of the people I travelled with would want to return. We’d come from Ireland for three days of funerals for my cousin and her father, my brother. My cousin and I arrived at Hampton Inn, where we had a few rooms booked because other cousins from New York were also staying for the funeral. The reservation was in my cousin’s name. One of the two people at the desk checked her in without saying hello, was quite rude, and handed over the key without telling us the room number. We felt like an inconvenience. We wanted a drink before bed. A sign said the bar was open from 5 to 10 pm, and someone at reception confirmed it closed at 10. At 9:30, I waited at the bar for five minutes without being served. I went back to reception to ask, was told “just a minute,” then returned to the bar as the rest of our party joined me. A very angry receptionist came behind the bar with plastic glasses and began pouring vodka for my cousin. When I asked for a glass of wine in a wine glass, she shouted that she wasn’t meant to have the bar open and now I expected her to wash glasses too. I was shocked. I’ve stayed at many hotels and have never been spoken to like that. She served everyone, locked everything up, and later came back into the bar while we were sitting there to get herself or someone else a Bacardi. It didn’t seem so closed then. We were attending a family funeral and didn’t appreciate being treated that way.

The location worked well, with a few decent food options nearby and easy access to the highways and downtown Yonkers. Staff were friendly, and breakfast was on par with Hampton Inn. The common areas stayed clean even with a lot of people around. Rooms were clean, though the carpets and other things showed some wear. The gym was small and poorly ventilated. The Peloton wasn’t working, and there were no towels or cleaning supplies in there. The pool was closed until further notice.
