The location is a real highlight. Charco Hotel sits in the historic heart of Colonia, in a picturesque riverside spot. The whitewashed stone walls and leafy courtyards give it a calm, cozy boutique atmosphere, and the staff were friendly and helpful. The restaurant served decent food too. Our room was comfortable, but felt fairly standard and dated. It could use some updates and minor repairs. For the price, the amenities and services didn't match what we found at other places in Uruguay. Some of the hospitality and attention to detail that make a stay memorable were missing. We stayed two nights while traveling through Uruguay. It was pleasant, especially for the charm and location, but not a standout. With some investment and more care, it could become something special.

Breakfast was fine and the restaurant was good, but at 300 euros a night the place wasn't on the same level as the excellent four-star hotel we stayed at in Buenos aires the day before, which cost a quarter as much. The rooms are OK, but they're not suites. There's just one chair, no desk, and a little outdoor seating. We arrived in the rain and couldn't find the annex with the so-called suites. Once we found it, we had to haul our bags up a staircase. The safe didn't work, and a blown fuse left the room door lock and remote lights out. The door was open all night. At 11 am, while we were out without wifi, someone in our group got a text saying to return the key to reception if we wanted the room cleaned. That should have happened automatically. There was one rather small bath towel, and no shower gel, only shampoo.

We spent our last night of the honeymoon at Charco, and the staff made us feel really special. They were so kind, helpful and friendly. The room was beautiful too. We had an amazing stay, thanks for a great last night ☺️

I was traveling from Europe and paid extra to book this "boutique hotel". I made the reservation online on my phone with a bad connection, and realized about two hours later, after the phone reloaded, that the booking had shifted to the same day. I called the hotel, and reception said they couldn't do anything and asked me to call the next day. I did, in good faith. They wouldn't refund me or move the booking, even though I wasn't asking for my money back, just a night on the right date. They were also very unkind. I know it's a small hotel, but I can't believe they lost the chance to rent the room that day. Even if they did, a small gesture would've been appreciated. I won't endorse a business acting in bad faith.

The rooms are spacious, clean and modern, with nice decor and good bedding. The restaurant on site serves very good food, especially with friendly staff, and free bicycles are available. It's a charming small hotel in an old house in the center of Colonia, and a comfortable place to explore from. But the service and amenities need work, or the prices do. I judge this by what I'm used to at hotels above 200€ a night. Around 100€ a night, I'd go for it. At a higher price, I wouldn't. We waited 15 minutes outside the closed front doors, and a more welcoming arrival, maybe a drink or hot towel, would help. A taxi we'd ordered was forgotten and arrived late, and the drinks we ordered to the room never showed up. The pool wasn't open, and nobody really showed us around or explained where we could hang out. Breakfast was too simple. A better juice selection, more egg dishes and sweets like crepes would be nice. The suites are next to the entrance, so you hear the very loud front door closing and other guests talking and walking through. It gets disturbing. It's a decent, comfortable place to stay, but at its price it doesn't live up to expectations or offer more than a simple three-star hotel.
