Compay Hostel Montevideo

The one thing I liked was the fast internet, up to 16 MBit upload speed. That gets the place two stars from me, especially since Montevideo generally has fast internet anyway. I was here in February 2016 with my girlfriend. At first it seemed fine, and there were even marijuana plants decorating the yard. Then we noticed small insects in our dorm beds and made the mistake of ignoring them. By the next morning we were scratching a lot and moved to another dorm. Staff said they'd have the first room professionally cleaned, but they didn't move the other guests, and nothing seemed to happen. My girlfriend later had a painful reaction, with several yellow welts up to 4 cm across. Other guests were getting bitten too. That evening I spotted more bedbugs in the new dorm. The only friendly receptionist offered us a storage room instead, which apparently didn't have bugs. We left for the hospital the next morning, and by then all the other guests had checked out as well. It took a lot of arguing to get even a 50% discount. That barely covered our hospital and medicine costs, let alone cleaning all our things. Bedbugs can show up anywhere, even in a clean place. Here, though, they didn't seem to care about hygiene and just waited for new guests to arrive, then disappear again after a short time. Definitely not recommended.

The double room was roomy, which was nice, but it had a strong damp, musty odor unless we left the window open. Coming back in from outside meant getting hit with the smell again, and keeping the window open wasn't great in cold weather.

The staff were the best part, and the location is good too. The breakfast was disappointing, though, and the hostel itself has clearly seen better days.

The shared spaces and kitchen were pleasant enough, but my dorm smelled moldy and the bathroom attached to it was in poor shape.
