The historic building is beautiful, with its marble staircase and old-fashioned elevator, and the location may work for tourists. For nomads, though, there are better areas in Montevideo. If I could give zero, I would. We booked a private room with a specific layout, but got a different one. Staff were unwelcoming and focused on listing rules, without telling us about the hostel’s perks. We only found out on day three that there was a WhatsApp chat. Breakfast wasn’t available for nearly half the week, even though the chat kept posting breakfast times. We’d arrive at the kitchen and be told there was no breakfast, despite it costing almost 10 USD. The room wasn’t well kept. There was dust when we checked in, and I have a photo, so we couldn’t have been the ones to make it dirty. There were visible stains, and the carpet looked bad. The bathroom is tiny, really only suitable for short people, and very dark, especially the shower area. The toilet kept leaking because its pump was faulty. One of our two towels had been washed, but had such big stains from previous use that it should have been thrown out. Nobody tried to clean our room during the whole week. There wasn’t much happening at the hostel. Staff were often loudly chatting with each other, playing videos from their phones on speaker, or recording angry voice notes. We heard about one event, flash tattoos, and that was it. The chat mentioned a walking tour as “our plans” for the day. We were given a pin, but nobody was there. It turned out not to be the hostel’s tour at all. They were sending people to the Curioso team. Just say that. I had to ask again before they confirmed it was guys from curioso and sent a different pin. If you don’t greet the staff, they won’t look at you or make any effort to be friendly or welcoming. I’ve never stayed in a hostel like this. There are rules telling guests to be quiet, and everyone follows them, except the staff.

For us, this was a zero-star stay. I know a hostel isn’t a five-star hotel, but the staff were rude and unhelpful, and seemed more interested in smoking on the balcony than helping guests. We were in an eight-bed room. The beds looked made when we arrived, but the sheets hadn’t been changed. My partner’s bed reeked of weed, so strongly I could smell it from the bottom bunk, and there was a heavy body odor smell too. He had to sleep halfway down the bed because the previous guest had apparently hidden weed under the pillow. The bed curtains had odd, unpleasant marks and stains, and my bed, I’m blonde, had black hairs all over it. One day I was sick and stayed in bed, so I saw the “cleaners” arrive. They only moved once they realized I was there. They made the beds without changing the sheets, then sprayed so much air freshener that I had to open the window because it was hard to breathe. The carpet looked like it had never been vacuumed. There was no soap in the bathroom the whole time, and they used thick hand towels in place of toilet paper. We booked mainly for the rooftop bar, but it isn’t there anymore, which was disappointing. On Saturday night, music from the common room kept us awake until 6 am, despite signs asking for quiet after midnight. We’d heard there was a pizza and hotdog night. On Saturday we asked about pizza and got a cold reply that it was on Fridays, but we were there on a Friday and there was no pizza night. The woman didn’t mention that hotdogs were served that day. We only found out the next day. The place felt filthy, with other people’s mess and bodily fluids, and the service was unprofessional. I don’t understand the positive reviews. I filed a complaint and didn’t get a refund. Please book somewhere that’s more worth your money. The area also feels very sketchy late at night.

The staff are lovely, the rooms are great, and the building is incredibly nice. We had a kind of two-floor suite, and it was perfect. The rooftop is a banger too. I’ve traveled all over South America, and this place really stands out. Don’t miss it if you’re in Montevideo 🤗.

The main area is still a nice place to sit and watch the street. The room was another story: water from the shower leaked onto the downstairs carpet, and they wouldn’t move us. The shower was extremely small, and the toilet didn’t flush properly. My allergies flared up in the room, which makes me think it wasn’t clean. The towels smelled bad. One staff member was rude, while the other was okay.

The lift was the one thing that seemed to work properly. We stayed a few nights, and the rest felt disorganized, almost like the hostel was closing. Several things in the room were broken and hadn’t been fixed, so the place felt neglected. The staff atmosphere didn’t help. Most seemed unhappy and overworked, and the service felt flat. Our one good interaction was with a friendly staff member from Cuba, who was kind and welcoming. There were eight of us, and none of us was happy with the stay. I wouldn’t recommend this hostel.
