We spent a relaxed lunch at Samarkand in a traditional family house, where we cooked bread in the traditional mud oven and made Plov, the Uzbek national dish, using a local Samarkanda recipe. We ate what we’d prepared and much more. It was a lovely experience, especially getting to chat throughout with Lud, the owner, about local curiosities. Highly recommended. Super!

The plov was made right there in the courtyard, and the welcome was just as memorable. It took a kind woman from the neighborhood to point us toward Reyhan Unique House, which felt like a secret to find. Stepping into the courtyard was like entering a world of family and food. Such warmth and kindness.

The host and his family were so kind and helpful, and we had a great stay. It’s a reasonable walk to the main attractions. I especially enjoyed talking with the host about how they make their livelihood, something I really value in a guest house. We recommend it!

I had a private room with its own bathroom, thankfully. I saw the shared bathroom facilities and, well, no thanks. The shower had hot water, and the owner was very kind and understood a fair amount of English. Other hostel guests were friendly, so it was easy to meet people and exchange tips. It was quiet at night, which mattered since my room opened right onto the dining table and gathering spot. The WiFi was decent enough for video calls while working remotely. Breakfast was included and leaned toward eastern tastes, but I was glad to have eggs, boiled one morning and fried another. The location is very residential, which wasn’t ideal for going out to eat at night. Shah-I-Zinda is about a 15-minute walk and Registan around 20-25 minutes, while the Amir Temir mausoleum is much farther. After sightseeing all day, going back to rest and then heading out again for dinner was a hassle. Next time I’d stay closer to Registan. Light from the dining area came through the thin curtains, so bring an eye mask. I slept well every night with one. There’s no soundproofing by the table, so quiet depends on whether the other guests are loud or obnoxious. The pension is in a back alley, and the owner didn’t answer when I called on arrival. I saw another guest waiting after he didn’t answer their call either. Be aware that nobody may be around if you arrive in the middle of the day. The outer wall has a latched door for entering and leaving, which I found annoying.

The hosts are sweet and welcoming. Behind the door, this lovely guest house feels like stepping into a 20th-century Uzbek household, from the vintage watches to the furniture. The cozy courtyard has an inviting Asian atmosphere.
