Kien Ocean Hotel

The check-out left me feeling humiliated. We were accused of taking a pair of slippers, though there had only been one pair in the room when we arrived and I hadn't taken any. I can easily buy slippers myself. I also had to pay extra while waiting for a taxi. The room felt more like a small storage space than somewhere to stay. Its two tiny windows faced a neighboring wall, with no view or sunlight, and nearby kitchen smells and noise meant I had to keep them shut. The layout was awkward, with no sofa, so it wasn't comfortable for a longer stay. On arrival, the floors were dirty enough that I had to throw away my white socks, and there were visible stains on the floor and walls. The fridge and microwave were old, worn and rusty. There was barely any kitchenware, just two spoons and a pair of chopsticks. Construction was going on outside my door on the staircase around 10 PM. It only stopped after I complained. I was surprised the staff hadn't considered that guests might already be resting, and found it disrespectful. Breakfast was boring and repetitive. I wouldn't call the place comfortable or recommend it.

Breakfast was very good, with both Western and Asian options and an egg station where you could order eggs how you liked. The staff were nice and spoke good English. My room was big enough for one person, with a very good bed, a modern bathroom and all the amenities I needed. I didn't hear any noise and slept really well. The hotel was clean and sat among several restaurants.

The bed was the best I've found so far, and the room had a large Smart TV with YT. The hotel feels bright and shiny after a recent refit. It's central, near the beach and restaurants, but still quiet. I was on the second floor facing the street and heard no noise. Breakfast had great Western and Vietnamese options, and everyone on staff was friendly. I stayed at three other places in My Khe and should've booked here from the start. 100% recommend.

The staff are fantastic, breakfast is good, and the location is great, just a block from the beach and restaurants. But smoking is a big problem. The concierge and guests smoke at the bar at the bottom of the stairwell, and the smell gets pulled up through the hallways and under your door. People also smoke in rooms and corridors. It's a stinking blot on what could otherwise be a wonderful stay. Also, construction starts at 7 every morning and goes until sundown, with work on almost every block.
