De Mei House

We spent 2 weeks at De'Mei House and loved the little family store next door. The area is great, and the staff were friendly and attentive. I can definitely recommend it to anyone after a comfortable place at a decent price.

This was a great budget hotel, basically new inside, with a functional kitchenette. We needed a cheap place to stay between apartments, and it worked perfectly. The owner helped carry our things out to the hotel, which was much appreciated, since it’s about 3 blocks from the road and you have to walk through narrow alleyways. It’s a big hassle with lots of luggage. There’s no daily maid service like at a more expensive hotel, but you can message the owner if you need anything. A little store around the corner has all the essentials. There’s lots of local life in the area, and people are very friendly. The alleys are much cleaner than the main roads. If you turn right when leaving, after 3 blocks you reach a main road with Fuji superstore, banks, coffee shops and local restaurants. Turn left and after about 5 blocks you get to the road alongside the lake. There are many really nice Vietnamese coffee shops there, plus a bar and night club. It’s a nice place to walk, with benches along the promenade where you can sit and contemplate your fortune at having found this hotel and area of Hanoi.

The neighborhood was peaceful, with cafes, shops, and the lake all within walking distance. The staff were friendly and even helped carry my bags when I arrived. I liked the room, too, but it didn't have the TV promised in the description. The owner told me they'd given my room to a personal friend, so I was put in one without a TV. I'd booked well ahead, and they first said there wasn't another room. When I mentioned I could stay somewhere else, suddenly one became available. That left me a bit put off.

We spent a month here, and the place felt quiet and safe. The bed was comfortable, the room was spacious, and there was lots of closet space. The market is a five-minute walk away and the lake only two minutes. Everything seemed brand new, from the clean kettle and refrigerator to the built-in stove, washing machine, and projector. Water heated up quickly, and a sweet young woman was on hand to answer questions promptly.
