Hanoi Backpackers Hostel & Rooftop bar

Bed bug alert! The lobby furniture looked gross, as if it hadn’t been cleaned, and the shower in our private room drained so badly that one shower flooded the whole place. There was mold and grime everywhere. Plugs either wouldn’t charge or fell out of the sockets. We were on the eighth floor, where the only entrance to the rooftop bar was, so other guests on the stairs kept making noise and being rowdy. With Beer Street nearby, some noise is expected, but the walls and windows had no soundproofing at all. I might have glossed over those problems, but then we found a bed bug. We killed it, photographed the blood smeared across the blanket, and showed it at the front desk. They laughed and said it couldn’t be a bed bug, then offered to change the sheets. If this is how they handle bed bugs, I’m sure other rooms have them too. They were never apologetic about either of our problems, and the refund offer was pitiful. It was one of the rudest interactions I’ve had with hostel staff. The trouble started earlier: we emailed before arriving on an overnight bus, asking if early check-in was possible. They said we could check in early for a fee and that the room would be ready. But when we got there, they acted as if we were asking too much, even though they’d confirmed it. They mansplained that the room had to be cleaned first and that hostel availability was always iffy, as if we’d never stayed in one. They kept repeating that check-in was at 2, although we already knew that, which was why we’d asked for early check-in. Don’t stay here. If you truly don’t care about bed bugs or cleanliness, I guess you could give it a shot.
