The hotel is a bit dated, though the rooms were clean, and it's fairly central for walking to most attractions. Breakfast was hit and miss for gluten-free options, but a few staff members could help. One thing to watch when booking on expedia: the hotel has only two king beds and doesn't receive those room details from the website. I usually confirm that a booking arrived, but rarely check the room details. We booked a king and were given two queen beds instead. At first the staff offered only a late checkout, then they eventually gave us an upgraded room for that night and moved us into the room we'd booked the following night. It was a great experience overall.

Its best points are the location and staff, who really try to please. The building dates back to 1890 and has a rustic charm, with big, clean rooms. It lacks quite a few amenities and some basics, though. The air conditioner and hot water only worked when they felt like it.

The Hotel Continental team made for a wonderful stay, and I'd love to visit again. I really enjoyed the hotel's history and how much effort goes into keeping the building as close to its original character as possible. The rooms still have their own AC, Wi-Fi, TV, and modern outlets. The location is probably its strongest point: the Saigon Opera House is right next door, Vincom mall is about a 5-minute walk away, and the train station is around 6 minutes on foot. Ben Trahn market and the Saigon Post Office are each about 10-15 minutes away. There's also a sightseeing tour bus vendor just outside the main entrance. Breakfast was good, with both western and eastern choices and a nice mix of protein and carbs.

We stopped in for a drink and sat out on the terrace, watching the city go by. The Continental Hotel has a timeless feel, and the character and history of the building make it seem like stepping back in time. A lovely spot to relax for a while and see another side of Ho Chi Minh City.

The terrace has a very colonial atmosphere, and the location is excellent. This place is best suited to people who love the film Indochine or a very classic colonial style. For the price, about USD 150 for an opera-view room, I thought it was reasonable. Check-in through Agoda was a problem, and the reception staff weren't helpful. They said they'd upgraded my room, but it was still the same 48 sqm room I'd originally booked. Be sure to enter the right number of guests: I mistakenly booked one person per room and was charged an extra USD 15 per room for the additional person, probably for breakfast. I also had some allergies while staying there, possibly from insect bites. The sheets felt dry and didn't seem up to five-star standards.
