This was sold to us by American Express as a five-star hotel. I won’t trust Amex with hotels again. It doesn’t feel like a five-star place at all. The first warning should have been that there’s no phone number or website to reach the front desk. Once there, we found it understaffed, and calls were rarely answered. There’s no air conditioning in the lobby, and the room’s air conditioning barely worked. In this humidity, that was extremely uncomfortable. The bathroom had no air conditioning and very poor lighting. Even the bedrooms at the much cheaper Hawaii Resort down the street have better air conditioning. The restaurant area should be enclosed and air-conditioned to keep insects off the food. Flies, mosquitoes, and ants roam freely, and the food isn’t protected. The service staff try their best, but the hotel isn’t ready yet. On the fourth floor, you can hear staff dragging and dropping things on the floor slab above early in the morning, since their service area is on the fifth. The beach here isn’t clean, and the water is quite polluted. The island lacks proper water treatment and water regulations anyway. The pool and bungalow areas are appealing and well landscaped, though. Save your money and try the Peak, the Wyndham, the Radisson, or the Vinpearl in the north. The island’s southern tip near Sun World also seems to have newer properties.

There are plenty of places to eat nearby, and a taxi or the popular ‘golf cart’ limousines can get you to a wide range of restaurants, bars, and night markets within about 10 minutes. The resort feels around 2.5 stars, so set your expectations accordingly. The room is comfortable, with a TV and air conditioner, daily housekeeping, and breakfast included. There’s a decent pool and a nice beach area with chairs, umbrellas, and towels. Breakfast is adequate, not extraordinary. There are no drinks or snacks served at the pool, and the little beach bar is more like a kiosk. It shuts at sunset. The restaurant serves breakfast only, with no lunch or dinner. After sunset, almost everything seems to close except reception.

The bungalow walls and doors were a bit grubby and could use a good spray and wipe or fresh paint. Some of the beach towels were old and ratty, and the replacement bath towels we got were damp. The beach was a little crowded, with rows of sunbeds. We booked at the last minute, with few options in our price range, and took a chance on Tropicana despite mixed reviews. It turned out to be a nice resort and we enjoyed our stay. We were surprised with an upgrade to a family bungalow. It was very spacious, and the bathroom had a walk-in shower with good water pressure. The pool area was nice and quiet.

The staff were outstanding, especially Kenny, the Day Manager. He went out of his way to help me with several things and made everything feel smooth and comfortable. Everyone was friendly and helpful. Tropicana Phu Quoc was peaceful and well maintained, with a great pool and a clean, relaxing beach area. The location is right on a beautiful stretch of soft sand and warm water, with amazing sunset views. There are plenty of good restaurants and cafés within walking distance, so exploring was easy. The resort had exactly the tropical, laid-back feel I wanted on Phu Quoc. I had a fantastic stay and would definitely come back.

I’ve stayed here twice now, and this 15-day visit was wonderful. Quang in the breakfast area was exceptional with his hospitality and is a real asset to Tropicana Beach Resort. Cheng, Jessica, and Kenny also provided top-notch service, and the cleaning and maintenance staff were great too. Thanks, everyone, for making my stay so good 😍🙏😍
