We spent our holiday in a private, detached villa with its own pool and a beach entrance just two metres away. The water was crystal clear, with tropical fish and turtles, and we had that stretch of beach to ourselves. Moso island across from us sheltered the lagoon in front of the villa. The gardens were colourful and well kept, and our Friday evening of traditional dancing and Vanuatu history was a highlight. The team made the stay special. The staff were skilled, welcoming and playful, and Manager Raj chatted with each of us as if we were old friends. Reception, restaurant and Spa staff were professional. Fishing, snorkeling and picnics on Moso island were available each day. We appreciated the complimentary airport transfers and daily drop-offs to Port Villa markets. The airport drive took about 40 minutes. In town there were a few air-conditioned duty-free shops, and markets selling food or crafts, including wood and seed items that would need to be declared when returning to Australia. Meals were as expected, though we would have liked a traditional dinner or perhaps a beach spit-roast barbecue. There’s no minibar for snacks like chips or chocolate, just milk for tea and coffee, but a bucket of champagne was waiting in the villa on arrival. We brought reef shoes and were glad we did in the lagoon. We’d happily return to this adults-only resort, where weddings and business conferences aren’t allowed, so it stays focused on rest and relaxation.

We were driving around the island and stopped for lunch. The welcome was warm, and the food was five-star. I ordered the chicken Caesar salad from the rotating menu, and it was hands down the best I’ve ever had. My husband’s fresh fish sandwich and chips were great too. The service was exceptional, and the location is amazing. We even met the chef, who had come from Vietnam just three weeks earlier. We can only imagine how lovely a longer stay would be. Thanks for everything 💗

The restaurant staff were welcoming, and honestly they were the best part of our trip. The room was comfortable enough, but it didn’t feel anything like a five-star hotel. We had a pool-access room, yet there was no privacy. From the paths, you could look straight into all the rooms, and that seems true of every room type. The food was among the worst I’ve had in a restaurant, let alone a place calling itself five-star. Portions were tiny, some dishes were literally inedible, and what was included seemed to change from day to day. The menu changed daily too, and it felt as if they were serving whatever was left in the kitchen or nearing its date. Every drink costs extra, including soft drinks, juice and sparkling water. A 300 ml bottle was about AUD 4, which is ridiculous when you’re paying around AUD 1,000 a day for a mediocre resort. Getting there was rough from the start. Customs was a mess, and the shuttle ride to the resort was its own bad experience. The driver seemed to be training for Formula 1. Things improved slightly once we arrived, but that was about it. I’d think carefully before booking The Havannah. If you’re after no privacy, a chance of food poisoning and a subpar resort, this is the place for you.

The private beach and all the water activities we could want were a big part of what made this place special. The bungalows have plunge pools and lovely decks for watching the sunsets, plus very comfortable beds and every amenity. Breakfast, lunch and dinner each came as three-course meals. The staff made us feel like family from the moment we arrived. The care and attention to detail at Havannah are world class, and they really want guests to have an amazing time. We’ll definitely be back soon!

For the amount we paid, this was just an average hotel, and I absolutely wouldn’t recommend it. The villas were dirty, and the cleaning staff used a wheelbarrow to wash the towels. Meals took a long time to arrive, and dishes came out cold. The food was terrible, with no fresh juice or fruit. Even three-star hotels serve better food. It only deserves three stars.
