Barrydale Karoo Lodge

We stopped for lunch on the way to Cape Town. It’s right on the main road, with friendly staff, a good menu, fair prices, and lovely decor. Worth a stop, or a visit if you’re staying in Barrydale.

The restaurant has potential, but the staff really lack people skills. Two older men who seem to own or manage the place came across as cold and unfriendly, and that attitude seems to carry through the team. I visited a restaurant at a nearby hotel and it was a completely different experience, warm and welcoming from the manager down. They may have regulars, but perhaps that’s because there aren’t many other choices in the area. If you don’t like people and only treat friends or regular customers well, hospitality may not be for you. I don’t think the staff are deliberately rude, but they seem to lack good leadership and examples to follow. I visited more than once, and the poor attitude was consistent. Do better!

We only stayed for one night as a break on a long drive, so didn’t get to explore much. The room was comfortable and well laid out, with a huge, very comfortable bed and a small bathroom. Water, tea, and coffee were provided. After a poor experience at the hotel restaurant the night before, which I reviewed separately, we skipped the included breakfast, so I can’t comment on it. Overall, a good, comfortable place to stay.

Really enjoyable night in a lovely hotel. The room was spotless and presentable, and the service was friendly. I especially enjoyed the full English breakfast. A hidden treasure, well worth visiting, and surprisingly affordable.
