I went to Macnut Farm for Artists in the Valley, an event I’d never heard of the farm through before. It’s mainly a wedding venue, but the owner is an artist and has a gallery there too. The garden grounds are gorgeous, with lots of lovely spots for photos. They’re working on several chapels around the gardens, each with its own look and interest. The little chapel really stood out, especially its painted windows, which the owner did herself. I loved being there.

Macnut has the warm feel of a big family gathering. Hannah cooks everything, and Sunday lunch really tastes like a generous homemade meal made with love. Paul's dessert, straight from the oven, was a lovely comfort-food finish. While the kids can run around the grounds, try dam fishing, or explore the fairy gardens, adults can browse and buy organic vegetables at stalls set up by people from the neighborhood. It made for a memorable family lunch, with a welcoming atmosphere all around. Well done to Hannah, Paul, and the team.

The owners were friendly and welcoming, and the venue itself is gorgeous, with a stream crossing the property and a tiny chapel. The first impression was inviting, but Christmas lunch was a letdown. The food tasted okay, though the hot dishes were cold, the dessert was instant pudding, and the selection was very limited. The dishes were basic and not what I’d expect for a Christmas lunch costing R395 per person. Service was poor too. The wait staff kept having to ask management basic questions, which meant longer waits for drinks. After lunch, the coffee was shocking: Frisco instant coffee, and we were told the cappuccino was an instant packet mix, like the pudding. Paying the bill also took a long, complicated wait. A beautiful place, but the food and service let it down.

“Small, intimate wedding.” The venue was okay, but the owner came across as abrupt and unfriendly, as if our presence was a favor. It’s a big day for most people, and a paying customer appreciates some compassion. Being there felt like being part of a sausage-machine business. The food was substandard, Checkers platter standard at best. They watch the clock closely, and if you run a little late, you can lose your deposit. In reply, the extra time was spent starting the cleanup ourselves. The bride was on the floor in her wedding dress cleaning, and we were still charged for the extra time.

So much care and hard work has gone into making this property what it is. It’s a magnificent place, with lush green vegetation and upkeep that’s clearly been done with love.
