The room we were assigned at Camps Bay Retreat bore no resemblance to the standard room we booked through Trivago. It was their “pod room,” basically a dressed-up metal shipping container. No air conditioning, just a fan, and it got unbearably hot. The bathroom was tiny, with metal fixtures and hardly space for one person, much less two. The bed seemed smaller than a queen, and there were almost none of the amenities you'd expect from a place presented as five star. The unit was near the road and exit at the bottom of the property, so reaching breakfast and other amenities meant an unpleasant climb up the stairs. It didn't feel relaxing or convenient at all. We complained as soon as we arrived and were told the property was fully booked. Staff kept referring to what we had paid and suggested this was the only room available at that price. It came across as insulting and dismissive, with no real effort to sort things out. I can't know how rooms are allocated internally, but the way it was handled left me feeling that guests paying more get the regular rooms while others are sent to the pod units. We didn't spend even one night there. We had to find another hotel at the last minute and pay for it ourselves, and that late booking cost us even more. It was the worst hotel experience I've ever had. A property advertising itself as five star made the whole thing feel ridiculous and unacceptable.

We booked a half-day leisure visit for our last day of the honeymoon, even though we weren't staying at the hotel. It came with a 60-minute massage, lunch, forest bathing in a wood-fired hot tub, a fruit platter, and time to unwind by the mountain pool. We thought it was great value for the price, since a massage alone can cost that much in London. The massage was lovely, and the staff went out of their way to help make our last day special.

Benson, Tina and Kevin made us feel so welcome while serving food and drinks, and Andrew's smile really lights up the place. The staff are what make Camps Bay feel like a little sunny paradise. Housekeeping is fantastic and the rooms are good quality, though they could use a brighter, more modern look.

We spent 10 days here on a girls' getaway and had a fabulous time. The hotel sits on a beautiful five-acre estate, with breathtaking views and unique trails. Our room even had its own swimming pool and hot tub. The staff were amazing, and I'd highly recommend this boutique hotel.

The hotel grounds are so well cared for, with people always tending the vegetable patches and gardens. Between the natural pools and unusual walkways, there's enough to explore for a whole day. We also enjoyed a massage at the spa, and the sea-facing Terrace was a lovely place to watch the sunset. Our room had a small wooden balcony with a hot tub, looking towards the mountain on one side and the ocean on the other. And the breakfast was easily the best I've ever had at a hotel. Every staff member was lovely. Special thanks to Avory, Memory, Siphelele, Casper, Benson and Andrew, plus the others whose names I didn't catch. They made our trip so lovely. I'll be recommending the place to anyone visiting Cape Town.
