Ikhayalamafu Mountain Hideaway And Private Nature Reserve

The hikes start right by the cabin, and the view of the Dragons Back is beautiful even if you stay in. We watched clouds move over the emerald peaks while eating in the fantastic kitchen. Paul and Rickie met us on arrival and showed us around. The spacious cabin had every comfort, on private property right beside the national park. The drive up was scenic, and our hike to The Sphinx brought breathtaking views. We loved it and would like to come back for longer.

This "Home in the Clouds" is so quiet and peaceful, tucked into the mountains among trees, with birdsong and the river beside the cottage. The place is private, roomy and really comfortable, with everything needed for self-catering. Wi-Fi worked well, and you can drink fresh, cool Berg water from the taps. There are lots of private walks on the property, with a hiking map provided. The Forest trail is a must, stunning and not too strenuous. We loved our stay and will come back to explore more. We booked both cabins for four of us over a long weekend, and when it was time to leave, none of us was ready. iKhayalamafu is deep in the mountains, among magical forests that felt like a scene from Lord of The Rings. Inyoka Cabin has a stream flowing past, and Ingwe Cabin has beautiful deck views. Both were comfortable and had everything we needed for self-catering, plus fresh flowers in the bathrooms, a lovely detail. The hikes begin right outside, and there are pools and little waterfalls a 5-10 minute walk away. Restaurants are nearby if you don't want to cook, though the roads can be challenging after dark. You feel tucked away right against the mountains here, with a bubbling stream nearby and walks starting at the door. The cabins are cozy and comfortable, with all the amenities you need, so just bring food and drinks. There are longer public mountain trails close by too. The walks on the private property climb steeply and can be challenging, better suited to fit walkers or anyone wanting to get fitter. But the indigenous forest, caves, waterfalls and streams make the effort worthwhile. A real Drakensberg getaway.
