Dungbeetle River Lodge

We had a lovely couple of nights here and would happily return when we’re in the area. The rooms were comfortable, with a great river view, and the breakfast was delightful, including some local options. Service was top class too.

The location is a beautiful and impressive piece of earth, and you can feel how much dedication went into building this place. Dungbeetle RL is well kept, with lovely little corners arranged in African style throughout. The owners are attentive and extremely reliable with arrangements, and they’re willing to go the extra mile for guests. Breakfast was magnificent. I had the best omelette so far.

We only stayed two nights, so we missed the chance to take a trip on the Sundays River or visit the Alexandria dune field. That gives us another reason to book the River Lodge again. For Addo Elephant Park, it’s very convenient: game drives start about 5 km from the southern entrance, and tours can be booked on site. The lodge is outside Port Elizabeth in a small settlement, where we found two restaurants, including one within walking distance. The house has around seven rooms or suites. We stayed in the Fish Eagle room, with a balcony overlooking the Sundays River. It was clean and spacious, with an open rain shower, a separate toilet room, a safe, coffee maker, and refrigerator. Breakfast is served from 8:00 a.m., usually on the terrace. There was fresh bread, squeezed orange juice, fruit, yoghurts, cereals, spreads, and egg dishes made to order. The staff were friendly and very accommodating.

Breakfast was a treat, with fresh bread, freshly squeezed OJ, and your choice of a cooked meal. I sat there with my binos, watching the abundant bird life as I ate. The river setting is fabulous, and the big comfy beds made for a great stay. The owners and manager were so welcoming and helpful, and the sweet schnauzers were a highlight of the welcome party. I loved every minute here and highly recommend it.
