Bayside Hotel 108 West Street

Mthiya was a real help with our bags, and his kindness made us feel at home while we were away. The cleaners and security guards were friendly and helpful too. Our room was clean, and when we reported that the remote wasn't working, it was fixed. We enjoyed the holiday, and the beach and Ushaka Marine World were close by. At reception, though, our first day was frustrating. Most of the ladies seemed busy with other things, while Precious was willing to assist. One receptionist, whose name I didn't get, was rude and unhelpful. She handed over the key without looking at us. We greeted the reception staff the next day and got no response. When we checked out, that same receptionist took the key without asking about our stay or even smiling. I wish the guards could show the reception team how to treat guests. We also weren't told about the parking charge. It was listed as free, but we found out it costs R50 per night.

My confirmed booking was cancelled weeks after I made it, with the hotel blaming overbooking. They won't reply to questions about cancelling confirmed reservations. I'd advise anyone with a booking here to check that it's still in place, and otherwise steer clear.

I booked in July 2025 for the Comrades Marathon in June 2026, partly so my international friends and I could stay together within walking distance of the start. I paid the full amount in March to avoid any complications. Then, 18 days before the event, the hotel cancelled, saying it was overbooked. They haven't answered my calls or explained what happened, and offered neither another place to stay nor compensation. At this point, reasonable accommodation nearby is impossible to find. What's left in Durban for that weekend is too far away, extremely expensive, full of cockroaches, dodgy, or some combination of those. This has left us in a terrible spot. I wouldn't trust them with your trip.

The staff were very helpful to guests, and the rooms are in good condition. Thanks for the great service.
