Gibela Backpackers Lodge

Gibela costs a bit more than an average backpackers, but it offers more too. It's clearly well kept, with a lovely feel, clean units and a pool that's essential in Durban summers. The central spot puts most Durban attractions within walking distance, along with places nearby to eat or have a drink. There's a large driveway for safe parking if you're just passing through.

Elmar is the real reason for the five stars. He's incredibly helpful, sharing plenty of local knowledge and helping with bookings and other information. The place is quiet and laid back, right by Florida road, with its restaurants and bars in an area considered safe. There's a swimming pool, a good continental breakfast, a nicely decorated lobby and a fully equipped kitchen. The beds are comfortable and the rooms clean. A few drawbacks: the old room fans make unpleasant noise, and I'd have liked mosquito screens or bed nets. It is a bit pricey for a backpackers, though the place itself is beautiful.
