This was our first time eating at The Phoenix, and it was a very nice place with lots of memorabilia to look at. The mixed grill and prawn curry were both excellent. The steak was tender and juicy, the flavor was very good, and the portions were generous. The curry was tasty without too much spice. I'd recommend both dishes. Getting there meant driving through town, though, and the town and central areas aren't places you'd want to go after dark. Given the food quality, I think the restaurant needs a better venue.

The old Phoenix Hotel in Port Elizabeth used to be well known for its lively atmosphere, and the previous owners worked hard to build that reputation. It's a pity, because the new owners don't do the name justice. Now it's expensive, the atmosphere has disappeared, service leaves a lot to be desired, and orders get taken wrong. It just isn't worth going anymore. It's become a second- or third-rate place.

Dinner at the Stage Door on 10 July 2019 was a treat. I ordered Surf 'n Turf, and the steak melted in my mouth like butter. The calamari was soft and came with chips. I loved the vibe and all the good olden days collectables on display. Staff were friendly, and the waiters were helpful. Definitely worth five stars, highly recommend this restaurant!

The rooms are quirky, and the hotel is clean and well looked after. There's a huge mix of odds and ends to poke around in, enough to keep you looking for ages. Staff were friendly and the service was great. The pub food is decent and good value, too. Worth staying here, or at least stopping for a drink and a snack at the bar. The place has an old-school feel and a cheeky sense of humor.

Bookings are needed on weekends because this place gets very popular. The food is hearty, homely pub fare and has always been excellent value. The new owners have made it alcohol-free, which is useful to know. It's an impressive old hotel, full of rare and interesting collectibles, and has a lot of history behind it. You'll find it in the old central part of town, right opposite the iconic Donkin Reserve, with its lighthouse and famous pyramid. One of South Africa's oldest hotels.
