The place was a big disappointment, especially since we chose it based on the good reviews. The water views in the photos are misleading now: where we stayed, there was hardly any water to see because of the widespread water hyacinth. They should update the lake, dam and water pictures. There were huge spiders everywhere. I understand there’s a lot of vegetation, but I live in a similar area with a large garden and regular indoor pest control keeps bugs out of my house. My grandchildren were terrified. In my bedroom, the toilet had a major water leak. The air conditioner was so noisy my granddaughter was afraid to sleep under it, and later I couldn’t switch it off. Breakfast was nowhere near the “superb” standard I’d expected. The yoghurt was full of colouring, the food quality was poor, and the staff kept checking how many pieces of toast we wanted, as though every slice was being counted. Serviettes were scarce too. We filled in cards with our breakfast choices, but they weren’t followed. I didn’t get the baked beans I ordered, my tomato was raw instead of grilled like the others in my group, and they served my cheese as a melted puddle on a plate after I said I don’t eat it raw. They could have put it on toast or in the scrambled eggs, but I still don’t know what it was for. The eggs were rubbery and just salty. The “beef sausages” were the frozen supermarket “viena” kind. Staff repeatedly asked things we’d already answered on the cards and hovered as if hurrying us out, well before checkout. They’re nice people, but need serious training in cooking, serving and treating guests. The owner needs to understand food quality matters. The layout has stairs everywhere, and our rooms were in dark corners. I’d asked for adjacent rooms, so I turned on the outside lights to help us move between them and see the stairs. Someone kept switching them off. My granddaughter fell in the dark. We went out for dinner with the lights on, but when we returned they were all off again, including the entrance light, so we had to use our phone lights. The plug points are downright dangerous. There were extensions everywhere, and one was overheating. We won’t return or recommend this place. It feels like the owners turned houses into guest accommodation to make money without caring about guests.

We left almost as soon as we saw the property and drove home. Our Valentine’s experience was ruined, and for the price we paid, this was nowhere near acceptable. The website photos don’t show the current condition. Nobody mentioned that Kosmos is right next to squatter camps, and the parking didn’t feel secure, with no gates or security staff. Reception smelled bad. The bed in the room was tiny, the wallpaper was peeling, and the bathroom smelled strongly, as if someone had just used the toilet. The dam outside was choked with weeds and hyacinths, and there were no boats going out like the website and booking.com photos showed. The neighboring house looked abandoned, perhaps occupied by squatters. The property needs a lot of maintenance, and we believe the advertising is misleading. We asked for a refund after leaving, but only received 50% after contacting booking. Com numerous times.

The staff are what made our trip so memorable. From the warm welcome when we arrived to being available with answers and suggestions for local attractions and restaurants, they made sure we were comfortable throughout. They were genuinely lovely people and went out of their way to help. The Shore House itself is beautiful and in a great location, and we highly recommend it for a relaxing getaway. Thanks to everyone there for such an enjoyable stay.

We enjoyed our stay, and the host even let us check in two hours early because our flight arrived early. Juliet was friendly and welcoming. Breakfast was nice, and the dam view from our room balcony was lovely. The house has a pool, braai area, pool table, darts and board games, plus private access to the sock overlooking the dam. It’s in a secure estate with boom gate access, though you need an entry and exit pin to come and go. The room we had only had a tub, no shower, and there wasn’t hot water after 10pm. I had to boil kettle water and fill the tub, which took about 30 minutes. I’d rate it five stars if not for the tub and hot water problems.

The service was friendly, but not nearly good enough. The WiFi barely worked, often not even enough to send messages, and watching a movie was so frustrating I gave up. There wasn’t enough hot water for a proper shower either. The bedside lamp kept going off whenever I moved it because the plug points seemed dubious. The shoreline was full of rubbish, which made it unpleasant. Breakfast was disappointing for the price, with a poor choice of dishes. I wouldn’t recommend it.
