Ivory Wilderness River Rock Lodge

We just got back from an incredible three-day safari, with so many magical sightings and moments. Our guide Francois was unbelievable, and the food was fantastic, including the way they handled several dietary restrictions. Victoria and Andrew were wonderful at anticipating what we needed and making us feel welcome. From my first message about booking, the team at Ivory Wilderness made me feel valued, and once we arrived, the staff treated us like family. An experience we’ll never forget.

The team kindly sorted out tasty sandwiches when the gap between breakfast and lunch felt too long. Food was great, and the place felt warm and personal, with only a few guests. After Kruger, we spent two unforgettable days at Ivory Wilderness with François, whose knowledge of the wildlife and Klaserie area made every drive special. We saw the Big Five, including a leopard with its prey. Getting there really calls for a 4x4, but it was absolutely worth it.

Darren was a brilliant ranger. His experience and passion for wildlife and conservation really showed, and he spotted animals while driving, navigating the tracks, telling stories, and answering our questions. We were fortunate to see four of the big 5, though the lions stayed elusive. Our rondavel suited us perfectly and was freshened twice daily. We were well fed and looked after, but the drives were the highlight. This was our first safari, and the two-hour drive in our hire car was bumpy and a bit challenging. Misty and Andrew gave us a warm welcome, and Ivory Wilderness felt like an intimate haven from the start. Thanks to everyone for making our two-night stay so special. A piece of our hearts is still there.

I came for six days, my second visit, and this quiet riverside spot is worth the 2-3 hour journey. I drove myself, though a shuttle is available, and saw plenty of animals along the way. The lodge has four “bungalows” for eight guests, plus a separate family house. It’s all-inclusive, with spacious, very clean rooms, friendly and attentive staff, good food, and special requests always accommodated. There are morning and evening safaris, with two vehicles, raincoats, drinks, and snacks provided. Klaserie Private Nature Reserve is vast and home to the Big 5, which I saw easily. I visited in December, during the rainy season, and animal numbers were still high on both my stays. The rangers explain the birds, animals, and insects. Internet is mostly poor, which was exactly what I wanted. If remote places appeal to you, this is a gem. Thanks to all the staff. I miss you.
