Tomo Safari Lodge

The game drives were incredible, and we were lucky enough to see the Big Five as well as wild dogs and jackals. Our bungalow’s private pool was a lovely extra, and the food was delicious. From arrival to our last goodbye, the whole team looked after us so attentively and made sure every request was taken care of. We’d happily recommend the lodge for both its location and its wonderful staff. Thank you for giving us memories we’ll never forget.

We spent four unforgettable days at Tomo Safari Lodge for our honeymoon, and the peaceful feel of the place was a real highlight. Sitting by the pool with a beer and watching animals come to feed and drink was something special. The room was spotless, comfortable, and well equipped, with housekeeping turning it down twice a day while we were out. Everyone at the lodge worked hard to make us feel looked after. The food was a huge hit, from breakfast through dinner, and there was plenty to choose from at the bar. The setting also felt wonderfully secluded despite being a short drive from Hoedspruit airport. Each stretch of the safari landscape looked different, and we rarely saw another vehicle during a drive. JD made the game drives for us. He was friendly, knowledgeable, and careful around the wildlife, and we felt safe with him. He explained what we were seeing and answered all our questions. By the end of the first day he already felt like a friend. The vehicles were clean, comfortable, and well maintained. We’d recommend Tomo to anyone planning a safari, and we’d love to return. We spent ten days at Tomo Safari Lodge and still could have stayed longer. The calm, beautiful lodge made it easy to unwind between drives, whether we were by the pool, watching animals come to the nearby watering hole, or enjoying the surroundings from our comfortable, carefully decorated room. The outdoor shower was especially memorable, with wildlife only a few feet away. The staff were kind, attentive, and flexible, including around our dietary needs. Every meal was delicious, beautifully presented, and just the right size. The team, the accommodation, the food, and the drives all made this the best holiday of our lives. We left relaxed and inspired, and can’t wait to come back. JD was a terrific guide: patient, funny, passionate, and full of knowledge. His instinct and experience led to some incredible sightings, including a herd of 150-200 water buffalo at a watering hole and the Big Five several times, once before 9 a.m. Every drive brought something different, and none disappointed us. Since we had a longer stay, we also went on two bush walks with Jamie from Wild Eden Escapes. Walking through the bush let us notice details we’d have missed from a vehicle, like how leopard spray smells like popcorn and the unique footprint pattern of each elephant. The food was a real standout for me. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner all exceeded my expectations, and the chef and team clearly know their craft. We learned a lot on the drives, too. Wesley answered our questions and explained what was happening around us, while also taking our hopes for future sightings into account. With the same guide for our three-day, two-night stay, he could build on what we’d already seen. We were fortunate to spot the Big Five and wild dogs, though, as Wesley would say, nature gets a vote and sometimes animals stay out of sight. Manager Connie and Wesley welcomed us as soon as we arrived and made us feel comfortable. The whole staff were great. The lodge’s schedule kept us busy with a 3-4 hour morning drive and another 3-4 hour evening or night drive, with a little downtime in the afternoon for a nap, a swim, reading, or simply taking in the scenery. We found Tomo Safari Lodge through Janet and Dave at Green Rhino African Travels, and couldn’t be happier with our choice. We’d gladly stay again and recommend the experience.
