We went to Buffalo Ridge expecting to remember the animals most. Instead, it's the people we'll think of first. The hospitality was the best we've experienced anywhere, and everyone seemed happy to be there. Chefs Julia, Katlego, and Josephine made meal after meal that matched or beat many high-end restaurants we've visited in the United States. Their fresh desserts were a treat, and we soon became fans of koeksisters. When I developed a sinus infection, Godfrey and Priscilla at reception went out of their way to find medication, which made a huge difference for the rest of our stay. Penelope, Amanda, Cassius, Grace, and Elias were also warm and helpful throughout. The wildlife and setting were incredible too. We saw four of the Big Five, lion, rhino, elephant, and buffalo, as well as cheetahs and African wild dogs. We missed leopards, which we learned are notoriously hard to find. A favorite sighting was two lionesses with five cubs, and we also saw elephant calves and a one-month-old rhino calf. Some of our favorite pictures were taken on an iPhone. On our last morning, a herd of elephants passed through as we were getting ready to leave. Joseph led all eight of our game drives and was outstanding. With 17 years of guiding behind him, he patiently answered our beginner questions, shared his knowledge of the reserve and its wildlife, and had a real instinct for finding animals. He tracked footprints and droppings, watched the horizon for movement, and communicated with other guides. Before the trip, I thought spotting animals was mostly luck and driving around. Joseph showed us how much skill goes into it. By chance, my wife and I were the only guests during our four-night stay in early June, so it was just us and Joseph on every drive. We know that isn't the usual experience, but it gave us a special chance to get to know the staff. The lodge is beautiful and peaceful, and we often saw wildlife from our chalet or the main lodge overlooking the watering hole. The chalet was comfortable, the outdoor shower was fantastic, and Wi-Fi and hot water worked without a problem. Madikwe being malaria-free gave us peace of mind. The lodge also arranged comfortable, reasonably priced transport to and from Johannesburg, and was clear about what was included in our stay. We felt completely at ease and wished we could have stayed longer. If we get back to South Africa, Buffalo Ridge will be high on our list.

The rooms were comfortable and really clean, and the kitchen and dining room staff were fantastic. The food was delicious, too. Joseph, our ranger guide, put in every effort to make the safaris exciting and successful, and Dorah gave an excellent massage. I'd happily return and recommend Buffalo Ridge to a friend.

Josef was a wonderful guide and knew so much. We saw loads of animals, and everyone on the staff was friendly. It made for the most amazing weekend in a great location.

The bar and restaurant were immaculate, the game drive was great, and the rooms felt five-star. This place is world class. Don't miss it in your lifetime. Thanks!

Godfrey made the game drives incredible. We saw lots of wildlife and enjoyed some beautiful sunsets. The lodge itself has a charming, rustic look that fits the surroundings, and the cabins are spacious and clean. Staff were welcoming, and the food was varied and delicious. The pool looked a little dirty, which was a shame because it would've been a perfect spot to cool off and relax between drives. Otherwise, it was a peaceful, restful stay. I'd definitely come back and recommend it to anyone wanting to get away and reconnect with nature.
