We came for quiet and time in nature, and the rain made our city break feel especially peaceful. It was a real retreat for my family and me, a chance to start the new year with calmer minds. We didn’t manage to see any animals, though, and it would help if the website said which season is best for wildlife spotting. The photos and description could use an update too. A couple of things were disappointing. We hadn’t been told about the refundable R300.00 payment due on arrival. The listing showed a stove, but there wasn’t one in our room, which was a problem because some of the food we’d brought needed cooking. I’d also like the owner to greet guests warmly so they feel safe, especially after they’ve already been in contact. Ethel was lovely and checked in on us. The location suits people who want to get away from city noise, have their own space, and connect with nature and God.

Karen’s handling of my Easter booking left me unable to take the holiday I’d paid for. I made a direct reservation on 13 March, paid in full, and sent proof of payment. When I checked with her on 30 March to make sure everything was fine, she said she hadn’t noticed my POP. Someone had booked through booking.com in the meantime, so she couldn’t host me and said she would refund me. The booking process was all through WhatsApp, but neither Karen nor the person managing her bank account picked up on the reservation and payment. Direct booking also felt like a problem: she pays commission to booking.com, which makes those bookings more expensive, yet when I first considered booking there, she told me not to and sent a cheaper quote. I found Karen a shocking host and the business disgraceful. The customer service was poor and the attitude came across as not caring. It seems she runs this as a hobby rather than her main business. I wouldn’t recommend doing business with this owner or establishment. There are plenty of other places that would value your custom. This isn’t what hospitality in SA should be.

Ethel looked after us so well. She’s a lovely lady, and the area is beautiful. I’d definitely visit again.

It’s a magical spot, and the place itself is fantastic. Just save the GPS location before setting out. Finding it at night along gravel roads can be a bit daunting.
