I've stayed at Hartford House at least three times, and the location, scenery, and recently renovated suites are still things I love. The new owners have brought this grand old place back to life, and it's magnificent. The service, though, lets it down. Front desk and dining staff can feel transactional and a little standoffish, without the personal warmth you'd expect for what Hartford House charges. Mandla Cele, the manager, is friendly and responsive, and the chef is pleasant and cooks good food. The meal was slow, though: we waited an hour for the starter. If the aim is to keep a 5-star rating, the staff need serious training in guest experience.

We spent two weeks travelling through the Natal midlands, and this was easily our favourite place to stay. The rooms were comfortable, spacious, clean, and tastefully decorated. The service throughout was exceptional. I especially want to mention the chef, who was attentive, friendly, and clearly passionate about cooking. Three of us were vegetarians and couldn't follow his 6 course menu, so he met with us and came up with wonderful alternatives. He also went out of his way to make a feast of the tea options. I'd recommend this special, distinctive stay and will definitely be back!

The farm setting is so peaceful, with rolling green hills and horses, and Hartford House itself is gorgeous. The staff were gracious throughout, even putting on the electric blanket on a chilly night. Check-in was easy and came with a welcome drink. We tried the tasting menu one evening, and chef Nkululeko made it a memorable experience by coming out to explain the dishes. The pea soup, pap & aubergine, risotto, and dessert were all phenomenal. Everything felt impeccable. I'm so glad I discovered this place and will definitely return to Hartford!

The peaceful surroundings and comfortable, luxurious rooms made it easy to relax. The food was outstanding too, with every meal beautifully presented and full of flavour. From the décor to the hospitality, the details felt thoughtfully handled. Right from arrival, the service was warm, attentive, and professional. Hartford House understands tranquility and exceptional service. Truly a wonderful experience, highly recommend!

On my second visit to Hartford House, I left disappointed by the drop in attention to detail, especially with the food. The setting and accommodation weren't the problem. The rooms remain beautifully decorated, and the views over hills dotted with cattle and horses are breathtaking. For a place that presents itself as five-star, dinner was surprisingly poor. The menu leaned toward casual pub food, like beef burgers and ribs with potato wedges, and the cooking didn't help. My salad was a heap of iceberg lettuce drenched in mayonnaise, completely inedible. The ribs were overcooked and covered in a sauce that reminded me of store-bought hoisin glaze. Flavours were flat, presentation uninspired, and even the crockery felt generic and out of keeping with the elegant surroundings. Breakfast was a small improvement, barely. They also need to give guests more individual attention and provide the in-room WiFi connectivity they advertise. Without a good on-site dining experience to match the accommodation, it's hard to justify coming back. The next evening we ate at a newer place nearby, with equally spectacular views and food that was thoughtful and memorable. The contrast with Hartford was stark. Hartford House could be world-class, but the kitchen needs to get back to quality and consistency. Guests deserve better, and unless this is addressed, the hotel risks losing loyal patrons to places that deliver across the board.
