The renovated suites are a highlight, and the scenery around Hartford House is lovely. I've stayed at least three times, and the new owners seem to have brought fresh life to the grand old place. It's magnificent. What lets it down is the hospitality. Both the front desk and dining staff can feel transactional and less personal, and some come across as a bit standoffish. That doesn't fit the warm welcome you'd expect at a place with this level of design and price. Mandla Cele, the manager, is friendly and responsive, and clearly tries. The chef is pleasant and makes good food, but service can be slow. We waited an hour for the starter. If Hartford House wants to keep its five-star rating, guest experience needs some serious staff training.

The chef really stood out during our two-week road trip through the Natal midlands. We had three vegetarians who couldn't follow his six-course menu, so he met with us and put together lovely alternatives. He also went out of his way to make the tea selection feel like a feast. Service throughout our stay was exceptional. The rooms were spacious, clean, comfortable, and tastefully decorated. This was easily the best place we stayed on the trip. It's a special, intimate stay, and I'd happily recommend it. We'll definitely come back.

We were welcomed at check-in with a drink, and getting settled was easy. On a chilly night, the staff even switched on the electric blanket for us. Everyone was gracious, and the service was lovely. The farm is so peaceful, with green hills and horses all around. Everything looked gorgeous and felt impeccable. We tried the tasting menu one evening, and chef Nkululeko made it memorable by coming out to explain each dish. The pea soup, pap and aubergine, risotto, and dessert were all phenomenal. I'm so glad I found Hartford House, and I'll definitely be back.

The peaceful surroundings and comfortable, luxurious rooms made it easy to relax. The décor and all the small details felt carefully considered. Meals were outstanding too, beautifully presented and full of flavour. From the moment we arrived, the service was warm, attentive, and professional. Hartford House understands hospitality and tranquility. We had a wonderful experience, and I'd highly recommend it.

The rooms are still beautifully decorated, and the views over rolling hills dotted with cattle and horses are breathtaking. The setting and accommodation weren't what disappointed me on this second visit. It was the decline in attention to detail, especially with the food. For a five-star property, dinner felt surprisingly casual, with choices like beef burgers and ribs with potato wedges. I ordered salad and ribs. The salad was just a heap of iceberg lettuce soaked in mayonnaise and was inedible. The ribs were overcooked, with a sauce that reminded me of bottled hoisin glaze. The flavours were flat, the plating uninspired, and the crockery felt generic and out of step with the elegant setting. Breakfast was a little better, but only slightly. They also need to pay more personal attention to guests and provide the in-room Wi-Fi they advertise. Without an on-site dining experience that matches the accommodation, it's hard to justify coming back. The next evening we ate at a newer place nearby, with equally spectacular views and food that was thoughtful and memorable. The contrast with Hartford was stark. Hartford House could be world-class if it recommits to quality and consistency in the kitchen. Guests deserve better, and unless this is addressed, it risks losing loyal patrons to places that deliver across the board.
