The mall is only a 5-10 minute walk away, and the price was great for a 3 night stay in my own room, around £15 a night, with a small extra charge each day if you want breakfast. The guest house was clean, safe and secure. The hosts and staff were lovely and welcoming, and ready to help with any issues. When I had trouble with the shower on Saturday night, staff came straight over despite the late hour and fixed it in seconds. I’d highly recommend staying here when travelling to Newcastle.

There were problems at check-in because the AirBnB listing wasn’t accurate, though they did get sorted out. Sthe, the woman at the counter, was very kind and helpful. We only had one towel and had to ask for another, and someone had left a condom in the room, which was gross. It didn’t feel very clean or well cared for.

The owner was friendly and let us hold a family reunion braai on the premises. Our room and bathroom were clean, though the entrance had lots of dead leaves and made a poor first impression. We got no sleep on the last night because other guests had a party right outside our room. I phoned the owner three times and sent a message, but the other guests ignored the rules while we followed them.

On this business trip they first offered me a room with no bathroom, just one across the passage, and only moved me after I complained. When I asked for ice, I was told there wasn’t any. Then she opened the deep freeze, scooped some up with her unwashed hand and put it in a glass for me. They also insisted breakfast wasn’t included, even though I showed proof of payment. I hope my boss can get back the money he paid for it. This dump will never see me again.

We slept well, and the guest house was clean, comfortable and extremely good value. Dinner tasted nice, though next time I’d rather eat at a restaurant in town.
