Crystal Springs Mountain Lodge

Our unit was quite a distance from the rest of the resort, but we had a lovely stay. The place has beautiful views, friendly staff, and quick service. The restaurant's food is delicious, with specials almost every day, and they'll deliver a fresh order right to your unit.

We had a car, but exploring on foot made it easier to enjoy the place and feel connected to nature. It's a great holiday getaway with everything you need. The place is well preserved, and even in winter there's plenty to enjoy: a heated pool, jacuzzi, gym, lovely lounge with books, spa, bar, and games room with snooker and table tennis. Avoid the Mashishing road on the way in, though, it has huge potholes.

The view is easily the property's best feature, and the scenery is fantastic. But the facilities feel tired and outdated, and the place falls short of what the surroundings promise. Check-in starts off on the wrong foot: at the front gate we were given four pages of forms, which felt excessive and old-fashioned. The process was slow and cumbersome. There's no Wi-Fi, which made it inconvenient for communication, work, or planning. The restaurant was dismal, and the nearest shop is about 30km away. Roads to anywhere are dangerous, with potholes, steep mountain stretches, and darkness. With modernization and a more guest-friendly approach, the property could be exceptional. As it is, the wonderful view can't make up for the outdated facilities, administration, and lack of connectivity.

The rooms were clean, room service was on point, and we made good use of the braai area. There's also a lounge fireplace with woodchucks, which would suit a winter stay. I loved a peaceful, refreshing swim in the heated pool at night when it was quiet. That pool is a must! The views are breathtaking and picturesque, and the whole place has the holiday atmosphere you need. Try the hiking trail, even if you only do a kilometre or two, it's worth it. We spotted jackals, kudu, zebras, waterbuck, bushbuck, wildebeest, vervet monkeys, and baboons. A 10/10 holiday for families, couples, or friends.
